Do you want to be in control of your life and create the results you desire? To be in a position of power and change whatever is not working in your life? Do you want to be able to change the people around you, the results you produce and even how you feel?
Most people believe that power and control are limited to the fortunate few who were born into power (e.g.: the tycoon's son), or acquire power through exceptional talent, business acumen or lady luck.
They believe (and we'll prove them wrong), that the rest of us are destined to be buffeted by whatever winds of change swirl around us. Economic slowdown, recession, company takeovers are the common winds of change.
The truth is, you do not need to have money or be in a top position to take control over what happens. In fact, people at the helm can also lose control...with much bigger consequences.
Look at the CEOs who watch their company's profits nose-dive helplessly in a bear market.
Or what about the US Army Generals who entered Iraq thinking that they were liberators of the people only arriving to find themselves regarded as invaders. Were they, the high and mighty in control? Not at all!
Taking Absolute Responsibility Gives YOU Absolute Power
The secret is to take absolute responsibility for whatever happens. That's right! When you take full responsibility for whatever happens, it means you acknowledge the fact that you have created whatever happens.
If you created it, then you have the power to change it. So, taking absolute responsibility for something puts you in a position of absolute power.
The extent to which you take responsibility over something is the extent to which you have control over it.
For example, if you take responsibility for your low pay, it means you acknowledge the fact that it was your actions and decisions that were the cause of this result.
Reasons could be that you are not creating enough value to be paid more; you have not demonstrated your true value to your boss; or that you chose to work in a company which does not recognize your true value.
Regardless of the reason or position you are in, you have the power to take charge and change anything in your life. The moment you take responsibility, you put yourself on the road to doing something about it.
You can either find ways to create more value by going beyond what is expected, make yourself more valuable by upgrading your skills, ask for a pay raise or find another job that will pay you what you are worth.
When you start taking any of these actions, your situation will change... you will get paid more!
Taking absolute responsibility for your situations and results puts you in a position of absolute power. So remember every time you feel like blaming others or circumstances, stop and take charge!

An Introduction to How to Write a Business Proposal
For each of the customer’s requirements, go through the list and you will probably have everything covered. You can use it for inspiration when writing, and you can use it like a checklist for reviewing a draft proposal.
And you thought proposal writing was supposed to be hard!
Proposal layout, formatting, and design
Layout and design
If there is no written RFP, or if the written RFP does not specify outline or format, then there are no rules for the layout and design of your proposal. The only standard to apply to the proposal’s appearance is whether it fulfills the proposal evaluator’s expectations. If they haven’t told you what they are or written them into an RFP, then all you can do is make your proposal legible. Your proposal layout should be highly readable and make it easy to locate information. You should make extensive use of graphics, because they enhance the readability of the document and convey information well. In the absence of instructions to the contrary, your headings, typefaces, margins, headers/footers, and other formatting attributes can be anything that you want that achieves the goal of your proposal.
So that you don’t have to study typography, we recommend:
· A serif typeface such as Times Roman
· 10-12 point type
· A column width of 50-60 characters (either double column or “scholar’s margins”)
· Page margins of at least .5”
· The use of color whenever possible
· Extensive use of graphics
· Full use of front matter (Table of Contents, List of Figures, etc.)
· “Navigation aids” such as a cross-reference matrix
· Appendices for data that must be provided, but disrupts your proposal’s story
· If the page count is large enough, use 3-ring binders or other binding
· Use tabs that break the content down into sections and make finding material easier
Final production
Final formatting and polish is often reserved for the end of a proposal effort. Indeed, in some environments they wait until all edits to the content have finished before they apply final formatting and perform reproduction. On a large proposal they may allow several days to a week just for final production. Some organizations use sophisticated desktop publishing and artwork, others use MS-Word for their final output. The value of a better-looking proposal must be weighed against the level of effort it takes to achieve it. We recommend that you format your proposal in a layout that you are comfortable with. Keep it simple, and don't overextend yourself by using an advanced layout that you have difficulty producingHow to Write a One-Person Proposal — for when your product is yourself
If you are a consultant, your product is often the services that you will perform yourself. Sooner or later you will need to give your customer a proposal, either because they ask for it, or because it can help you persuade them to approve the project. To approve the use of a consultant, many companies will need a written statement of work and other information. Putting it in their hands can expedite the process. If you are not a consultant, you may still need to prepare a proposal from time-to-time to expedite a decision or persuade someone to take action on your behalf.
Your goal will define the content of your proposal. People sometimes write proposals to persuade the reader to take an action, make a selection, reach a decision, spend money, offer a job, or grant a raise. Large, formal proposals are often prepared in response to a written Request for Proposals (RFP). One person proposals often do not have a written proposal to provide guidance. You must anticipate the information that will be required by the reader to take the action you desire and then design a document that will achieve your goal.
Your proposal should be more than your resume and a work plan. As an individual, your proposal will be partly an introduction, partly a statement of qualifications, partly a work plan, partly pricing, and partly an articulation of the reasons why the client should approve your recommendations.
Your resume only addresses your qualifications, and even these a resume tends to address only in a generic way. You should customize your resume every time you use it to emphasize the qualifications that are most relevant to the person you are trying to persuade. For example, are you a network technician, an administrator, an engineer, or a project manager? Many networking consultants could play all of these roles. But which is more important to this project and this client -- your education, your experience, you certifications, or your capabilities? You should customize your resume to make the relevance clear, to prove that you have the qualifications required to do what you propose, and to support you rationale for why the client should accept your recommendations.
In addition to your resume, you have some explaining to do:
· What will you accomplish for the client?
· How long will it take?
· What resources will be required?
· How will they benefit from the project?
· How much will it cost?
· Who are you to be making these recommendations?
· Why do they need you?
· Why should they have confidence in your ability to do the work correctly?
· Why should they accept your recommendations?
Here are some additional topics for more complex proposals:
- o Staffing
o Management and Oversight
o Allocation of effort
o Orientation and Phase-In
o Deliverables
o Metrics, measurements, and performance standards
o Quality assurance
o Communications
In order to answer these questions, your proposal should start with an introduction to what you plan to accomplish and how they will benefit (start by explaining what's in it for them). Then provide your work plan, including methodologies, resources, and schedule. You might also provide your resume to support your ability to deliver as promised. Once you've laid this foundation, provide your pricing and rationale, emphasizing the return on investment and value.
Depending on the complexity of your work plan, this can usually be accomplished in a couple of pages. You can use any format that will fulfill the client's expectations. Your proposal could be in the form of a letter, memo, report, document, email, or contract. When to require a contract is a matter of personal and legal judgment. When you do, I recommend that you include it as an attachment to your proposal. Contracts tend to be perceived skeptically, so you want the message delivered by the proposal, with your goal being to persuade them to sign the contract.
Whether your goal is the signing of a contract or something else, and whether your proposal is delivered in the form of a one page memo or a three-inch binder, the entire proposal should revolve around persuading them to take the action you desire. You must be clear about your goal and turn that into a clear call to action in writing.
Because you will probably be producing your own proposal, you should make sure that you design the layout of the document around your own capabilities to produce it. In other words, don't get too fancy. Go for simple elegance instead of complicated sophistication. Just make sure that it fulfills the reader's expectations. This is harder to do when you don't have a written RFP. If you don't know their expectations, make an effort to discuss their expectations and issues such as:
- Do they want something formal or informal?
- Does it have to meet the requirements of the purchasing department?
- Do they need a strong financial justification?
- Have they already decided and just need something to facilitate completing the paper work?
- Are there any forms that must be included or formats to follow?
- Will they follow a formal evaluation process?
Remember, your proposal is only a part of how you achieve your goal. If you are a consultant, remember that what they are buying is you — not the proposal. You will need to practice your salesmanship. This is especially true if there is no formal evaluation process. There is a school of thought that says that you shouldn't submit the proposal until you know what the decision will be. If you can't achieve this, then make sure that you have a personal follow-up plan for after the proposal is submitted. The follow-up can be crucial for supplying additional information and validating what you put on paper. You don't have to be pushy to follow-up, just be helpful, and remind them that you can be even more helpful if they accept the proposal.
. 7 Tips for Creating a Great Business Proposal
Q: I was wondering if you had any tips on what constitutes a good proposal. Much of my business comes from making proposals, and I think they could probably be stronger, though I am not sure they are weak, if that makes sense. Thanks in advance.
— Kirk
A: In his excellent book, Writing Winning Business Proposals, author Richard C. Freed says this about business proposals:
Although a few are outstanding, most aren't. Many offend with 'cut-and-paste' boilerplate, miss important opportunities to provide value, suffer from poor logic and organization, and focus more on you than on me and my organization. Although some do a few things well, some don't do much well at all.
I think he is on to something. I read quite a few business proposals, and have written many. Most often, and most successfully, my proposals have been to publishers. Each time I have written a book, the process begins with a proposal that explains what the book would be, who its intended audience is, why it would be better than competitive books, and why the publisher would be nuts not to publish it.
Similarly, not a few business proposals come across my desk. Some are excellent and some are not. So here then are my 7 Tips for Creating a Great Business Proposal:
1. Write Clearly and Succinctly: There is a tendency in business writing generally, and in business proposals specifically, to try and show how smart you are by using excess verbiage, jargon, and run-on sentences. Don't do it. Be succinct. Make your point and move on.
Remember: When people begin reading the proposal, they have little or no idea what you are proposing, so you have to walk them through the process. You do so by starting at the beginning and clearly, simply, and logically moving forward by making your points one at a time.
Start with the big picture and drill down as you go along.
2. Make a Good Argument and Counter Possible Obstacles: A great proposal is, essentially, a sales brochure, disguised. In it, you put your best foot forward, put your company in the best light, and make yourself irresistible to the reader.
How do you do that?
The best way is to marshal the top facts and arguments in your favor. Have a theme and reinforce it again and again. Take the reader down a path that leads but to one conclusion — that hiring you makes the most sense for them.
You also have to put yourself in the readers' position, think of what counter arguments they may be considering, and deal with those potential obstacles honestly. That makes you trustworthy.
3. Show your Personality: Far too often, business proposals are devoid of life, as if the person writing it is some Employeetron 3000, programmed to say nothing, be boring, and not offend.
I say, let your personality come through. Of course this is business and you have to follow some business conventions, but as you do, also let the reader see who you are. Share your enthusiasm for your business, their business, the idea, something.
4. Use Graphics Intelligently: Don't make the mistake of bogging down a perfectly fine proposal with excess graphics. Yes, of course you need graphics; they can clarify an idea, and liven up a proposal and allow readers to focus on something other than words. That's smart. Just don't get carried away. Whether you use a program like Publisher or PowerPoint, just be sure that the graphics reinforce the sale rather than distracting from the point.
5. Don't Oversell: Avoid hyperbole. As soon as you cross the line from understandable pride to obnoxious overstatement, you lose credibility. Once readers think you're not shooting straight with them, they may question the truthfulness of everything in your proposal—all that they read so far, and all that is still to come.
You avoid this unenviable fate by staying on the safe side of overstatement.
6. Avoid Boilerplate Language and Catch Typos: Another sure way to lose readers is to have them think that your proposal is a cut-and-paste job, consisting of boilerplate data and text. Certainly you can reuse persuasive information from elsewhere, but try to keep it to a minimum and don't make it obvious. Your proposal should read as if it were created especially for this particular client or customer. And while you're personalizing the proposal, triple-check for typos.
If it is clear that you didn't give the proposal your best effort, why would your readers think you would give their project your best effort?
7. Always Keep the Reader in Mind: A proposal is a marketing tool, and as such, remember Marketing 101: Stress benefits, benefits, benefits.
Finally, while price is important and must be discussed, do so only after you have wowed readers with your crisp writing, powerful arguments, supporting graphics, and a plethora of potential benefits. Then you can go in for the sale.

CAREER BUILDING, STARTING NOW,
Bad Things Must Happen to You… For Good Things to Happen!
As many of us are feeling the repercussions of one of the worst recessions in recent history, I would like to share with you my philosophy on the EQUATION OF LIFE. If you studied Math, Chemistry,
Economics, Accounts or any one of these mathematical topics before, you would understand that equations have to balance.
For every good, there must be a bad. For every positive, there must first be a negative. For light to exist, there must first be darkness. For every market boom, there must first be a crash. For you to experience happiness, you must first experience sadness. For you to experience pride and inspiration, you must first have experienced disappointment and adversity. The greater the initial failure and disappointment, the sweeter will be the pride of success.
I remember watching the show 'The Pursuit of Happyness' where it was based on the true story of Chris Gardner who went through a very difficult period of his life. His wife left him, he was broke, evicted from his home, slept in public toilets and in homeless shelter, jailed for unpaid parking tickets and went through a series of unfortunate incidents.
However, he persevered where ordinary men would have given up. Finally, when he got selected to become a stockbroker in one of the most prestigious companies on Wall Street after competing against 20 other candidates, he broke down and shed tears of intense pride and happiness.
The fighting spirit that the tough situations built within him was what gave him the drive to build a multi-million dollar stock broking firm himself. If he did not first go through those heartbreaking setbacks, he would not have become a millionaire.
For there to be God, there must be the devil (I know some religious people will want to kill me for saying this). Think about it, if not for pain, suffering and evil, will people turn to God for salvation? It is during hard times like these that people pray and go to places of worship more.
If you watched the matrix, the 'architect' mentions that the equation has to balance for the matrix to exist. In order for Neo (the Hero) to exist, there must be his opposite (i.e. Agent Smith who was the super bad guy).
This applies to every aspect of life. If George Bush did not screw up the US economy and damage the US's reputation so badly, Barack Obama would not have become the first African American President today.
If Al Gore would have won, he would probably have done an OK job and the US would have voted in another white guy. At the same time, if Al Gore had become the US President 8 years ago, he would not have made such a positive impact on global warming issues, won an academy award for his documentary and won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Again, 'failure' led to the the birth of success.
If I did not get kicked out of Primary school (Primary 3) and get rejected from 6 secondary schools after my PSLE exams, I would never have been sent by my parents to learn about NLP.
If I did not learn about NLP at the age of 13, I would not have been able to inspire thousands of students through my first book 'I Am Gifted, So Are You!' and achieve all the success that I have today. I would just have been another average Singaporean stuck in an average job.
So, how does this apply to your life? Well, instead of fearing and feeling lousy because of the bad stuff that happens in your life, get optimistic and know that there lies a great opportunity that always goes along with it.
To your success,
CAREER BUILDING,
Travel Nurse
What is a Travel Nurse
A travel nurse is a licensed nurse who typically works in a hospital for a few months at a time before moving onto a different hospital in a different part of the country.
Hospitals like to hire travel nurses and other traveling health professionals for a variety of reasons. Travel nurses can bring a variety of experience and knowledge that a hospital can benefit from. Lots of times, a travel nurse can act as a mentor for other nurses that have just completed their training and are not yet comfortable and/or confident with their new professional status. Medical facility's that have just opened will often hire the services of a travel nurse until they are up and running smoothly. The new, inexperienced staff will be able to benefit from the travel nurse's previous work experience. Most travel nurses enjoy the experience of traveling, meeting and working with new co-workers, and hope to gain a well rounded work experience that will serve them when they settle on working full time at a specific medical facility. Many travel nurses claim that the experience allows them to develop a better understanding of their chosen specialty. These same travel nurses also claim that their unique work experiences have helped reintroduce them to patient focused nursing.
Before they start working at a new hospital, a travel nurse has already established an agreement with the hospital. This agreement states what salary the nurse will be making while she is working for the hospital. Before traveling to the new hospital the nurse knows how much of their travel expenses will be paid for. They also know where they will be living while they are working at the medical facility.
Travel nurses generally enjoy a more lucrative salary then they would receive if they worked in a single location. The salary the travel nurse earns is generally based on the location they are working, typically a travel nurse will not earn as much working in a hospital in a rural community as they will earn working in a large inner city hospital. Some nurses prefer travel nursing to nursing in a single medical facility because they enjoy the opportunity to see the world and other cultures. Working in a constantly changing location challenges a travel nurses knowledge and talents. The skills that travel nurse develop on their journeys are skills that they will be able to utilized when they settle on a home base.
Travel nurses find employment through a travel nursing service. This service pairs nurses with medical facilities that are seeking a travel nurse. The travel nursing service typically has a long and happy relationship with hospitals, medical facilities, and medical professionals. The nursing service helps reach agreements between the medical facility's and the travel nurse. The travel nursing service will also be able to help the travel nurse make sure that they have the proper licensing to work in the state they are about to be going to.

Who Makes a Good Travel Nurse
On some levels working as a professional travel nurse looks like the ideal job. It provides nurses with an opportunity to live and work in different parts of the country. They can interact with new people. Travel nurses pull in an excellent salary. They make friends all over the country. They can move south in the winter, and north in the summer. If they feel like taking a few months off, they don't have to worry about explaining things to their bosses, they just give themselves a few months to improve their mental health before they accept a new assignment. Travel nurses claim that their jobs gives them an opportunity to re-establish their patient focused medicine. Nurses have excellent medical and dental benefits. Who wouldn't want to be a travel nurse?
The reality is that not every person who comes out of a nursing program is not suitable for a career as a travel nurse.
When you are considering a life as a travel nurse you have to ask yourself if you really like to travel. The life of a travel nurse is serious, hard core traveling. Travel nurses are constantly on the move, going from one state to another, taking assignment after assignment. All the moving around eventually takes a toll on the body and soul.
Bear in mind that travel nurses are working, this is not an extended family vacation, they aren't back packing across Europe. While they are on an assignment travel nurses are on a schedule. They are expected to report to work, on time, at the beginning of each one of their shifts. While they are working they are dealing with sick and injured people. They are expected to give one hundred and ten percent of themselves while they are working. Travel nurses go away to work, not to party.
Do you have an easy time making new friends. Travel nurses are constantly going to cities and towns where they are strangers. They don't know anyone in these places. In order for their experience to be positive they have to have a talent for turning complete strangers into close friends.
Nurses that have a significant other may have a hard time adjusting to life as a travel nurse. Unless the significant other is able to travel from one location to another it is difficult to stay together as a couple. One circumstance when travel nursing does work when a couple decides to work in tandem and are able to find nursing assignments in the same hospitals and medical facility's.
Before you sign with a nursing agency decide if you can tolerate moving away from your family, friends, and pets. Working as a travel nurse is going to require you to spend several months away from your home town.
Carefully consider all the requirement and responsibilities expected from a travel nurse before you sign with a nursing agency. Qualities that a good travel nurse should embrace are a zest for adventure, a strong work ethic, confidence in their medical knowledge, and a gregarious personality. If you are a nurse with at least one year of experience working in a hospital and feel that you would make and excellent travel nurse start placing your application at agencies.
Where to Find a Home Nurse
When a doctor tells an adult child that their elderly parent needs round the clock care the child's first though might be to place their parent in a nursing home. This isn't necessarily a bad idea. A majority of the nations nursing homes hire competent and caring employees, there is normally a nurse on duty, the patients receive their medications in a timely fashion, and nursing homes provide their patients with the opportunity to interact with other patients.
On the other hand there is the option of hiring a home nurse. Many home nurses care for their patients for a few hours a week or even on a daily basis. They come into the home at an appointed time and make sure that the patient is in good health, taking their medication, and following the doctors orders. However in cases where round the clock care is required, there are home nurses who will move into the patient's spare bedroom where they can keep a watchful eye on their patients at all times.
It is not unusual for the family to decide that a home nurse is the option they prefer to take, this is especially true when is doubtful that the patient has long to live. The next problem is finding a home nurse to move into the patient's home.
The first thing the family needs to know is that, when round the clock care is required, more then one home nurse will be needed. Most of the times a family has to hire multiple nurses that then arrange to work in shifts. By working on a rotation nurses are able to stay alert and watchful while they are with their patient. Working in shifts also allows the nurses an opportunity to have a private life where they can take a break from their medical duties.
Where can you find a batch of home nurses that are capable of tending to your elderly parent's medical needs?
One of the people who can make a few suggestions about where you can start looking for reliable home nurses is your parent's physician. The doctor should be able to make a few recommendations of nurses and nursing agencies that can match your parent up with a group of reliable and personable nurses that you can confidently welcome into your home.
If your parent's physician has predicted that it is doubtful that your parent will live past a certain point you can contact your state's hospice. They will be able to help you make arrangements for your parent's care and can help you find reliable home nurses.
Check and see if there are any nursing agencies in your immediate area. If you are unable to locate a nursing agency that specializes in home nurses in your local area, you might try contacting a nursing agency that specializes in travel nurses.
If, for whatever reason, the nurses that you hire do not work out, contact the agency immediately. Be friendly and polite when you explain your families reason's for requesting a replacement.
What's Better for an Elderly Parent-A Nursing Home or Home Nurse
As parents age they usually develop a wide variety of ailments that slow them down and make day to day living difficult. As they continue to age and their physical conditions worsen, their children find that they are taking on an ever increasing share of the responsibility of caring for their elderly parent. At some point a majority of these children realize that at some point their parent's health has deteriorated to a point that the child can no longer take care of the parent. At least not by themselves. When this happen the child has to decide if their elderly parent would better off in a nursing home or if moving a nurse into the home would be a better option.
Nursing homes are great because they provide twenty-four hour round the clock care. Most nursing homes hire competent and caring people. Your parent will receive three well balanced meals, receive their medications in a timely fashion, and have the benefit of a social life. The down side to nursing homes is that it is sometimes difficult to visit your elderly parent. It is also difficult to decide if moving your elderly parent from their familiar surroundings and into an unfamiliar nursing home will cause their parents condition to worsen at a more rapid rate.
A home nurse is a nurse who is trained to come into a patients home and care for them. They are responsible for making sure that the patient continues with their physical therapy and takes all their medications.
Some home nurses come into the home for just a few hours a day to check their patients overall health and to help them take their medication. These nurses are typically paid an hourly rate and usually don't move into the home.
Some people hire a home nurse to help patients rehabilitate after surgery. These nurses come into a home and check that the patient is proceeding with their physical therapy, that they are eating, that their spirits are high, and that they are taking their medications and painkillers, and to answer any questions that the patient might have. This type of home nurse could be at a patients homes seven days a week or as seldom as once a week. This type of home nurse is typically employed by a hospital or medical facility. The facility pays the nurse and then bills the patient or the patients insurance company.
In some case doctors recommend that their patients recommend that a patient needs twenty-four hour, round the clock care. In these cases, a home nurse normally move into the patients home. The home nurse typically sleeps in the patients spare bedroom. They help arrange doctor's appointments, make sure the patient is following a strict diet, they see that the patient is taking all their medications, and make sure that the patient doesn't seem to becoming depressed over their condition.
It is not unusual for a home nurse who moves into a patients house and become a valued member of the family.
Turning a Temporary Travel Nurse Position Into a Permanent Job
For the most part the life of a travel nurse seems to be for nurse that are in the dawn of their careers before they relationships, families, and other responsibilities that force them to find permanent employment. The other time that many nurses become interested in an occupation as a travel nurse is towards the end of their careers, after their children move out of the house, leaving their parents free to pursue nomadic whims.
It happens, especially to the younger nurses, that they are working at a travel nurse assignment and find that they fall in love with the city they are in, they adore their co-workers, or they find the job so rewarding they want to keep it.
When a nurse finds an assignment that they don't want to give up is consider the contract they signed with their nursing agency. If they signed a contract that has a time line it is going to be difficult to get out of the contract and accept a permanent working position. Nurses that have long term, binding contracts with an agency will probably find that they have to work as a travel nurse long enough to fulfill their contract. Once they have worked out the terms of their contract they can go back to the hospital or medical facility that they enjoyed so much and seek a permanent position.
Sometimes travel nurses will find out that the temporary position they are currently filling is just that, temporary. For whatever reason the job was created on a one time basis and no matter how badly the travel nurse may want it at a permanent position it just isn't possible. When this happens the travel nurse has two options. They can decide if it is the hospital they like working at, or maybe they just really like the city, or perhaps they really click with their current batch of co-workers, or they feel that the job they are doing is tailor made for them (and it really might be). If they look at all their options and decide that it's the hospital or their fellow nurses that appeal to them they can apply for a permanent position in the hospital. If the travel nurse decides that it isn't necessarily the hospital, the staff, or the position that appeals to them they might want to consider looking for a hospital in a similar location.
If, after you have looked at all the options and decide that it really is the position that is making you consider exchanging your nomadic shoes for a more permanent pair, talk to your nursing agency, even if you have a long-term, binding contract, the agency will be able to keep and eye peeled and look for similar positions. If you are at a point in your life when you are able to accept a permanent position look at other hospitals across the country. Just because the hospital you were working at only offered the position on a temporary basis doesn't mean that other hospitals wont have the position available on a permanent basis.
The main reason that younger travel nurses give up their careers as travel nurses in favor of more permanent positions because they are tired of traveling, they are ready to start a family, or other members of their family need them at home. When its time to find a permanent position keep an optimistic attitude, you'll find the right position.

Travel Nursing-Working in Different States
When you were going to school to become a nurse you were probably told several times that each individual state requires its very own license in order for an individual to practice medicine. You are probably already licensed to nurse in the state where you became accredited, that is probably the same state that you plan on working as a nurse. However if you are a travel nurse you don't know what state you should be licensed in.
Each state has its own set of policies and laws when it comes to travel nurses. Some states have a grace period, a period of time that a nurse can work in the state without a medical license, provided they are certified nurses in some state. In some states this grace period is a mere thirty day, in other states it can be ninety days. It varies from state to state. Some states will even award a temporary nursing license for the duration of the job.
Before accepting a job, do your homework, a quick Internet search is a quick and efficient way learn what the state you are considering working in requires in the way of licensing. After reading decide if you are qualified to work in the state. If you aren't qualified decide how big a hassle will it be to become qualified and then decide if the job is worth the hassle.
The nice thing about being a travel nurse is that you work through a travel nursing agency. The agency typically helps match jobs to your personality, provides you with a travel and housing allowance, makes sure you paychecks arrive in an orderly fashion, and makes sure you are qualified for each and every position you take.
The people who are in charge of your travel nursing agency know each individual states requirements for practicing medicine within their state lines. They know if you can work in the state for a certain amount of time without a license and they know if you have to get a license before you start working. Best of all they know the names and phone numbers of the people to contact if you aren't yet qualified to work as a nurse in a particular state. The people who run your travel nursing agency know how to get a license for a state in and efficient and expedient fashion. They can make the whole process painless. The people who are in charge of the nursing agency should know, maybe even faster then you will, what you need to accept a job.
If the agency tells you that you have to get a license in order to practice medicine in a certain state, find out how much getting the license will cost and know who pays the fee, you or your agency.
After being granted permission to work in a state find out how long you can legally practice medicine in the state. This information is especially important if you are working on a grace period. You don't want to get arrested for practicing medicine without a license because you spent a few extra days working.
If you had to become licensed before you were allowed to practice medicine, find out how long the license is good for. This could be useful information when you decide its time to hang up your traveling shoes and become a permanent nurse.
Travel Nursing With a Friend
Working as a travel nurse can be a fun career that is filled with new faces and exciting adventures. Working as a travel nurse can also be a very lonely profession.
Travel nurses are nurses who make a living traveling from hospital to medical facility, moving from state to state. Traveling nurses temporarily fill positions at hospitals and medical facilities for a short period of time. Typically travel nurses work at an assignment for three to six months before they move onto another position. If a travel nurse works several back to back assignments if can be years before they get back to their home town to spend quality time with family and friends.
One way to alleviate the loneliness is to work tandem with a friend. Two nursing friends, often a pair who went through nursing school together, joins a agency that specializes in finding positions for travel nurses at the same time. Once their applications have been accepted at the agency the two friends scan the agency's available jobs and find two assignments available at the same hospital or medical facility. If they are unable to find jobs in the same facility the friends might be able to find assignments in the same town.
Travel nurses that work in pairs know that when they leave on a new assignment that they will see at least on friendly face when they get to a new town in a new state. When they start their new job they know that there will be at least one person who is willing to listen to them complain or rejoice about their new co-workers. Travel nurses who work together are able to offer each other a shoulder to cry on when everything seems to go wrong.
A benefit to friends working together as travel nurses is the ability to share travel expenses. Most travel nurses shun flying, preferring to drive from a completed assignment to their new assignment. Driving from assignment to assignment means that travel nurses came save the expense of renting a car. Friends that are both travel nurses can drive together to the new assignment can split the cost of gas and share hotel rooms.
Friends who work together as travel nurse can also save money by sharing living expenses. Not only can the friends split the cost of the monthly rent, the pair can also split the utilities and the cost of groceries. When you are going to be living together tell your nursing agency and let them know that you will be sharing the housing, this could mean that the agency looks for a bigger space. If you are going to be rooming together remember that the apartments nursing agencies generally find for their travel nurses are small. Be prepared for tight living quarters. The space becomes even tighter if one of you has a pet.
Having a friend with you will give you someone to go out with while you are in an unfamiliar city. The experiences you share will strengthen the bonds of your friendship.
Some nursing agencies report that they have had a great deal of success with spouses who work and travel together as travel nurses.
The Travel Nurse and the Pet
There are numerous perks to being a travel nurse. You get to see the many different and varied parts of the country, you tend to enjoy a larger salary then your stay at home contemporaries, if you can't stand your co-workers you at least have the knowledge that you'll only have to deal with them for a short period of time before you can move onto a whole new set of co-workers. Most travel nurses have great dental and health plans. You are constantly expanding on your working educations. You get to work with a wide variety of patients. Your traveling expenses are usually paid either by your travel nursing agency or your temporary employer. You seldom have to worry about finding a new home. You are making new friends all over the country. In some cases if you and your best friend are both travel nurses you can work side by side with a familiar face. The benefits are lucrative. You are probably part of a great reward program. Your temporary housing is fully furnished.
The down side to travel nursing is if you are a pet lover. The lifestyle of a travel nurse is not well suited for keeping a pet of your own.
One of the big reasons you will probably have to find a new home for your dog and/or cat is all the traveling you will be doing. It is difficult and stressful for a dog or cat to be constantly moving from one part of the country to the next. Some pets are more adaptable then others. if your pet has a difficult time dealing with change, dragging it along on your cross country journeys could potentially shorten its life.
Consider the expense of traveling with your pet. The travel nursing agency typically makes sure that your travel expenses are paid for but that doesn't mean that they will be willing to pay your pet's travel expenses. More then likely your dog or cat's plane ticket will come out of your pocket.
Travel nurses are generally provided with fully furnished housing that is close to the hospital or medical office that they are going to be working in. This housing is normally in the form of a hotel room or a short rent apartment. On the average this type of housing does not allow pets because pets shred curtains, chew on furniture, ruin carpets, and expose other tenets to allergens. If you insist on taking your pet along, you might find that you are going to have to find your very own housing, housing that will allow you to keep a pet.
Pets, especially dogs, require a lot of your attention. This is especially true after you have transplanted them from the home they know into a home in a different part of the world. You will probably be working long hours. Do you really want to have to take your dog for a walk and play with it when you finally get home.
If you decide that your new lifestyle is not fair to your pet, talk to your friends and family, find out if someone is willing to take your beloved pet into their own home provided that you pay their expenses. This will give you piece of mind knowing that your pet is in good hands while you are away from home, and will let you see them when you return home between jobs.
The Perks of Travel Nursing
Travel nursing is nursing that allows a nurse to work for a few months in one hospital before moving on to another hospital that is in a different part of the country. Hospitals and medical facility's use travel nurses because they feel that they can benefit from the travel nurses expertise, to help get a new facility up and running, and to act as a mentor for a novice staff. But why would anybody become a travel nurse.
A huge reason nurses pursue travel nursing careers is the money. Travel nurses make significantly more money per hour then their contemporaries who work in just one hospital. Travel nurses do not get paid directly by the hospital they are working for. Typically the travel nursing agency collects and hands out the travel nurses salary.
Travel nurses love traveling. Through their jobs they can not only visit different parts of the country they can actually live and work in various parts of the country. They get to see how medical services differ from one part of the country to the next.
Travel nurses know that if and when they meet a co-worker that they don't get along with, they know that it isn't a big deal. They will only have to deal with them for a few months and then they will be moving onto a different location.
Travel nurses make lots and lots of new friends all over the county.
The average travel nurse enjoys excellent medical and dental benefits. In most situations agencies that specialize in travel nurses offer these medical and dental benefits to lure travel nurses to their agency. Some nursing agencies also have 401K plans.
Working as a travel nurse is an excellent way to build a fantastic resume. The things a nurse learns during their experience as a travel nurse will go a long way to obtaining a successful job in a home hospital when the nurse is ready to cease their nomadic ways. The people you meet working as a travel nurse will be valuable references, before completing a work assignment make sure you keep a record of names and phone numbers that you can use as references when you are ready to find a permanent nursing position.
Some travel nursing agencies offer their nurses an additional way to make some extra money by offering a bonus each time the nurse makes a successful referral. Because the travel nurse is constantly working at hospitals and medical facility's that are full of brand new nurses the opportunity to encourage referrals is endless. Some agency's also offer their travel nurses a completion bonus when a job has been finished.
Some times friends who have gone through nursing school together decide that travel nursing is something they can do together. Working in tandem means that the travel nurse always see familiar face no matter where they go.
Some travel nurses enjoy the experience of working in various parts of the country they decide to further their traveling careers by offering to work at missionaries and hospitals all over the world.
The Disadvantages of Being a Traveling Nurse
As a traveling nurse you will need to be able to adapt to your surroundings quickly. Since s/he will be traveling to new areas and dealing with different jobs on each assignment the traveling nurse accepts this is one very important draw backs to the job if you are not able to adapt quickly.
Since nursing deals a lot with interaction to patients and your co-workers if you are a shy person then meeting new people constantly may also be a drawback. If you take a long time to build a good working interaction with your co-workers becoming a traveling nurse may be a drawback.
As a traveling nurse you need to be able to adjust to out of the ordinary situations and the unexpected. If you like and are more comfortable in surroundings that you know and are familiar with then a career as a traveling nurse may not be the wise choice for you as you are constantly changing your surroundings. When you travel things can go wrong, no mater how much you have planned no matter how much detail you have put into your plans the unexpected will happen. If you are uncomfortable dealing with problems that can arise during travels then you may want to look into a more contemporary nursing job. If you love the security of home life a traveling nurse moves around a lot and their home is in various parts of the country while they are employed by different assignments.
If you are the type of person who likes to be close to their family and can not deal with being away from their family for long periods of times then you need to be aware that a traveling nurse can be gone for roughly 6 week periods of time to much longer. A typical assignment lasts from 6 weeks on up to 52 weeks. The one plus to this is that you can choose your assignments and choose the places you are willing to relocate so if you wish to only go a matter of a few hours away or 2 days away the choice is yours to accept an assignment or not.
Another draw back is that you are on call usually 24 hours a day because you are living on site, or if you are on a cruise ship assignment your services will be rendered as needed. For people who wish to work a set schedule this can sometimes be upsetting to them mentally and physically.
There is sometimes even co-worker resentment to deal with. When a co-worker finds out you are a traveling nurse they know you are being paid higher for the same work that they are doing. This sometimes leads to resentment awkward working situations. The best way to deal with situations like this is to be pleasant and helpful and to understand that you are there to do a job. A lot of times it will even have a non traveling nurse look into becoming a traveling nurse.
Lastly one of biggest drawbacks is dealing with two employers.
The agency you work for and the facility that hired the agency to place a nurse in their employ. Sometimes the provisions in your contract with your agency will conflict with the regulations that the facility is trying to have you work.

Search the internet to see what others say about the agencies.
Becoming a traveling nurse is beneficial to many nurses that have worked the same job for years. They are often burnt out on the same thing day after day and looking for a change. A traveling nurse job could be the change that you are looking for.
Selecting a Reliable Travel Nursing Agency
Travel nurses do not find employment working at various hospitals by themselves. They find employment when they have their application accepted at a travel nursing agency. Travel nursing agencies are agencies that match available travel nursing employment up with available travel nurses. Because their financial fate hinges on the nursing travel agency, it is important that travel nurses find a good agency.
The first thing travel nurses have to consider is that it is the travel nursing agency, not the hospital, that pays their salary. The hospital cuts a check to the agency, who then uses that money to pay the travel nurse. Before applying at the travel nursing agency the nurse should ask how often they will be receiving checks from the agency, do they get paid weekly, monthly, bi-weekly, or do they only get paid when the job has been completed. It is important to know how often you can plan on receiving a check so that you will be able to plan a budget. Talk to other nurses who are employed through the agency, find out how happy they are with the agency's payment plan.
Try to find out how often travel nurses employed through the agency are working. Are they able to find employment twelve months a year if they want it, or do they find that they have long periods of idleness in between jobs. If the travel nurses who are working through the travel nursing agency have long periods between jobs find out if that is due to personal choice or a lack of available travel nursing positions.
When you are considering a potential travel nursing agency find out what their policy is for travel expenses. Some travel nurse agency's pay the travel expenses of their nurses, other agencies deduct the cost of traveling out of the travel nurse's salary. Some agencies even have a policy that requires the travel nurse to pay their own travel expenses. Other agencies provide a traveling allowance, they provide a certain amount of money for the nurse to travel to their new job, if the nurse's ravel expenses exceeds that amount the nurse is responsible for the additional cost. Travel nurses typically drive to their new jobs but on some occasions they choose to fly. The way that the travel nurse agency handles the nurse's travel expenses will make a big difference in how the travel nurse budgets.
Talk to the travel nurses who are already employed by the agency about the living arrangements. Most travel nursing agencies find housing for their nurses. Talk to the other travel nurses about how accessible the hospitals are to the housing. Find out if the housing is typically well furnished. Ask if the housing facility's are kept clean or if the agency just looks for the cheapest possible place.
Other things that you might want to consider asking before you select a travel nurse agency is how long nurses typically remain with the agency. You will want to find out how long the agency has been in business. You will also want to know if your pay rate and hours are guaranteed. Ask the agency what types of benefits they offer their travel nurses.
Picking a Specialty Before your pursue a Career as a Travel Nurse
Just like doctors, once they have completed most of their educational requirements nurses generally choose a specialty. Some nurses prefer to work in a small doctor's office, other nurses like the hustle and bustle of working in a busy hospital. Deciding the type of atmosphere you would like to work in will help you decide what type of specialty you should start pursuing. Nurses who are interested in spending time working as travel nurses need to choose a specialty so that the travel nurse agency they are hired by will have an easier time placing them at various locations.
Before a nursing student can settle on a specialty they need to do some research about each available specialty and choose one that best suits their interests and makes the best use of their individual personalities. There are many various specialties for students to choose from, they include; Ambulatory care, emergency care, occupational health, critical care nurses, holistic nurses, and home health care.
Nurses who pursue careers in ambulatory care are not nurses who ride around in ambulances. Nurses who specialize in ambulatory care are nurses who work at helping treat a multitude of illnesses and injuries. It isn't unusual for ambulatory nurses to expand their career to include video conferencing. It is often ambulatory nurses who can be found teaching educational courses.
Emergency care nurses are nurses who work in the emergency room. Emergency care nurses see patients who are suffering from strokes, heart attacks, severe injuries, and sudden illnesses. Some nurses who specialize in emergency care go on to get a helicopter pilots license so that they can fly the hospitals helicopter and pick up and transport patients to different hospitals. Emergency nurses see a variety of illnesses and injuries on a daily basis.
Occupational health nurses are nurses who work with patients that have been injured while they were working. It is not unusual for a business to hire the services of an occupational health nurse to come into their work area and identify any potentially dangerous issues. Occupational health nurses often have a close working relationship with OSHA.
Critical care nurses are exactly what they sound like, nurses who work in the critical care unit. These nurses take care of patients that are recovering from severe injuries, heart attack victims, and severely ill patients. Critical care nurses need to have steady nerves and have to be able to maintain their composure in all situations.
Holistic nurses are nurses who take care of a patients spiritual needs while providing services such as aroma therapy and acupuncture. These nurses are typically long on patience and have good communications skills.

How to Get Along With a Home Nurse
Whenever you are dealing with an elderly parent who's health is failing, you are going to be stressed. This is one of those times when you are not going to be at your best. You are already worried about whether you are doing the right thing for your parent by keeping them at home and hiring a home nurse to take care of them as opposed to moving them into a nursing home. You have to deal with the rest of your family. You are watching your parent, who was once the person who took care of you, grow weaker and more ill with each passing day.
The good news is that when a home nurse is employed to take care of your aging parent they don't expect to see you, or your family at their best. They understand that you are not going to be at your best. Hopefully they have been properly trained and know how to handle the stressed family as well as they know how to take care of their cranky, confused patient.
The first thing you can do to make sure that the home nurse who is going to be taking care of your elderly parent's medical needs is to make sure that nurse has a personality that compliments you and your family. The way you get a nurse that suits your family's personality is being sure that you are completely honest with the agency you are using to locate the home nurse. Make sure your description of your family, their routine, and your parent's medical needs is completely true. The more honest you are about your needs and requirements the easier it will be for the agency to match you with a home nurse. If your parent needs to be physically lifted an moved make sure that you request a nurse with enough strength to get the job done.
When you are told that a nurse has been found for your parent, make sure you meet the nurse before they start taking care of your parent. Make sure this is a person whom you are comfortable welcoming into your home. If the nurse is, for whatever reason, not someone you are comfortable with, politely request a new nurse.
Make sure that both you and home nurse are both perfectly clear on what the nurse will be doing while she is in the home. When the nurse is just coming to the home for a few hours a day it is easy to know and understand that they are a professional that is doing a job. The line between health care and house keeper can become a little more blurred. Before the nurse ever moves into the spare bedroom, make a list of what they will and wont be doing. Make sure the whole family understands. Having a clear understanding of the nurses responsibilities will make everyone's life's easier and will make the whole experience as pleasant as possible.
Remember that the home nurse is a professional. They are in your home to take care of a family member, but they are not an actual member of your family. Make sure that your maintain a polite, friendly, but professional relationship with the home nurse

Office nurses are nurses who work in a doctor's office. Because office nurses generally work in doctor's offices, they tend to have a fairly routine work schedule, that seldom changes from one day
Another type of nurse is a home nurse. A home nurse is a nurse who goes into someone who needs medical attention (often the elderly) and sees to their medical needs. Nurses who are interested in becoming travel nurses are required to be RN's. Travel nurses have to spend one year working at a hospital before most agencies will accept their application. How do Travel Nurses Find New Work Assignments
To anyone who has spent weeks and even months combing the classified section of their local newspapers looking for jobs, or the person working out of a temp agency who can only find employment that lasts for a couple of days or a few weeks it seems incomprehensible that a travel nurse is able to finish working on one assignment, pack their bags, and move seamlessly onto a new assignment in a different state. A good travel nurse doesn't have to return to their home town if they time their assignments right. It might sound incomprehensible but that is what happens.
If you stop to consider the situation travel nurses aren't really employed by the hospitals and medical facilities where they are working. Travel nurses are technically employed by the nursing agency. The agency gives each travel nurse a travel allowance. They find and in some cases fund the travel nurse's housing. They make sure that the travel nurse is legally able to work in each state. Most importantly the travel nurse's agency is the place where the paychecks come from.
The nurse's agency is where the travel nurse gets their latest work assignment. Each agency has their own policy for matching travel nurses with work assignments. Some agency's match new assignments with nurses who qualify for the position and are available to take it. Other agency's post a job board on their agencies website. When it is time for a travel nurse to find a new assignment they simply have to go to the agency's job board and search available jobs until they find one that sounds suitable for them, they then contact the agency, requesting the assignment.
Once a travel nurse makes a request for an assignment the agency double checks that travel nurse is qualified for the position. Once the agency determines that the travel nurse is qualified for the position they make sure that the nurse is also legally allowed to practice medicine in the state where the assignment is located. If the travel nurse needs to have paperwork filed in order to obtain a license in the state, the agency starts working to make sure it happens as expediently as possible
Once the travel nurse has been approved for the assignment, the agency starts looking for available housing. While the agency is looking for a place for the nurse to live the nurse needs to think about their travel arrangements. Most travel nurses drive to each assignment but some prefer to fly, especially if their new assignment is located in a large city where public transportation is provided and it is difficult to keep a car.
It is imperative the travel nurse's agency make sure that their nurses have plenty of assignments and that the travel nurses they employ are happy with their assignments. The agency's only make money if the travel nurses they hire are taking lots and lots of assignments. The smoother each assignment goes the more likely the travel nurse is to take on more assignments.
Housing the Travel Nurse
Travel nurses travel all over the country working in various hospitals and medical facility's for short periods of time before they move onto a different job. Working as a travel nurse lets them see various parts of the country, provides them with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, introduces them to new friends. Many travel nurses claim that working as a travel nurse gives them a renewed sense of patient focused nursing.
One concern nurses have when they are considering perusing a career in travel nursing is housing. They want to know where they will live while they are working in an unfamiliar part of the country. They want to know how they are going to be paying for their housing. They also want to know if the housing will be safe and clean.
Normally the agency the travel nurse works for is responsible for finding the travel nurses housing. They try to make sure that the housing is close to the facility that the travel nurse will be working at. They should make an effort to find housing that is comfortably furnished and is clean. The type of housing that most nursing agencies look for is furnished apartments that are available for a short term lease.
Financing the travel nurse's housing can vary from one agency to the next. Some nursing agencies give the travel nurse a living allowance while other agencies expect the nurses to pay for their housing themselves. Travel nurses need to read their contract carefully so that they will know whether or not they have to add housing into their budget.
Before a travel nurse enters into an agreement with a nursing agency they need to talk to other travel nurses that the agency already employs. Ask the travel nurses if the agency does a good job at locating housing for their nurses. Find out if the housing is normally convenient to the work site. Is the housing normally in a nice neighborhood or do the other travel nurses sometimes fear for their lives when they return to their temporar

When Workouts Go Wrong: Aerobics and Injuries
First and foremost, when you are doing aerobics consider your dress. Wearing good shoes is important. Aerobics require lots of movement, so when you have worn shoes or laces that come untied often, there is a good chance you may slip and fall. CAREER BUILDING, STARTING NOW,
Dopey' Sylvester Stallone Made his Dream of Stardom a Must
At his peak, Stallone was one of the most popular and highly paid stars in Hollywood, commanding a fee of US$20m per movie. Was he just born under a lucky star?
Was he a naturally talented actor? Was he at the right place at the right time? Hardly. He was someone who seemed to have all the odds stacked up against him.
His family was so poor that his mother had to give birth to him on the doorsteps of a school. A blotched delivery by students caused a facial nerve to be severed, leaving him paralyzed on the right side of his face.
As a result, Stallone had to live the rest of his life with slurred speech. He even had to deal with having a drooping lower lip and being made fun of because of his name 'Sylvester' (associated with the Looney Tunes cat).
Despite all these limitations, young Stallone dreamed of becoming an actor and inspiring millions of people through his movies.
As you know many young people go through a phase of wanting to be an actor, a star ...the difference between Stallone and the rest of youthful dreamers was that his dream was not a merely wishful thinking.
To Stallone, it was an absolute must. He was truly committed to doing whatever it took to make it happen.
First he enrolled in acting school and then started going for auditions. Predictably, with his wooden acting, his dopey looks and his slurred speech, Stallone was rejected for every part he applied for. But he never gave up. Doggedly he just kept changing his strategy and taking action.
The way he landed his first part is a fine example of how he was willing to do whatever it took. When he was rejected after yet another audition, he pulled up a chair in front of the manager's office and sat down, refusing to leave unless they gave him a chance.
After sitting there for hours, they were so moved by how much he wanted a chance that they relented and gave him a part. Although he appeared for a couple of minutes (as an extra), it gave him that first breakthrough he was after.
Unfortunately, that experience was followed by yet another string of unsuccessful attempts at getting another acting job. At that point, his wife told him to give up his 'stupid dream' and get a real job.
His reply was, 'If I get another job, I would lose the only thing I have got going for me...my hunger.' 'By quitting and getting a job, I would be selling out on my dream'.
Stallone eventually wound up so broke and desperate that he was forced to sell his dog for $50 in order to survive. It was the saddest moment in his life because his dog was the one friend he had got left.
At this, the lowest point in his life, he watched a boxing match between then world heavyweight champion Muhammed Ali and Chuck Wepner, an underdog that everyone thought would be defeated within
three rounds.
What no one expected was Wepners' determination and tenacity. He lasted the total of fifteen rounds with Ali, just refusing to go down.
Sly was so inspired by what he saw that he had visions in his head about a movie that he was going to write. He started writing profusely for 72 hours non-stop until he finished the manuscript for 'Rocky'.
He was so excited by the script because in his mind he knew that this was going to be the movie that would change his life and his fortune.
But when he went round attempting to sell his script, everyone felt that it was too predictable and that nobody would be interested in watching a movie about boxing.
But he didn't give up. He kept on going and going until one company made him an offer of 125,000 for the script and the rights to make the movie. This should have made Sly overjoyed but his dream was to be an actor and not a writer.
So, he told them that the condition of sale was that he be cast as the lead actor. They objected saying, 'You're a writer! you're not an actor!' 'There is no way we will let you act!'
But Sly stood his ground and refused to sell the script if he wasn't the lead actor. They even increased their offer to $250,000, but Sly kept insisting that he fitted the role of 'Rocky', and no one else.
Although he was broke and hungry, he refused to sell out his dream for a six-figure pay check. That was his level of commitment!
Eventually they reluctantly agreed, on the condition that the movie be made on a shoe string budget of less than a million dollars and Stallone would get only $35,000 for the writing, directing and acting. Sly would however, get a percentage of the profits, if the movie made money. He agreed immediately.
The first thing Sly did when he got his money was to go in search of the man who bought his dog to buy it back. When he finally tracked down the man, he offered to buy his dog back for $100.
The man declined his offer saying that he was not interested. Sly upped his offer to $500. Still the man refused. Sly again upped his offer, this time to $1000. The man still would not budge saying, 'No amount of money will ever convince me to sell this dog.'
While most of us would give up at this point, Sly knew that if he was committed to do whatever it takes, he would find a way. Eventually he did get his dog back. He paid the man a whopping $15,000 and also gave him a part in the movie as part of the deal.
When Rocky was launched at the box office, it grossed over $225 million and was nominated for ten academy awards (including best actor), eventually winning an Oscar for Best Picture & Best Director.
Sylvester instantly shot to fame as an action star and lucrative offers came in for future blockbusters, which were to eventuate in First Blood, Rambo and the Rocky sequels.
His eventual success came from the fact that to him, becoming an actor was truly a must. He believed that when you are committed enough, there is always a way!
BUSINESS NEWS,
FOREX (Foreign Exchange Market)
Forex markets – trading internationally
Forex market trading is trading money, currencies worldwide. Most all countries around the world are involved in the forex trading market, where money is bought and sold, based on the value of that currency at the time. As some currencies are not worth much, it is not going to be traded heavily, as the currency is worth more, additional brokers and bankers are going to choose to invest in that market at that time.
Forex trading does take place daily, where almost two trillion dollars are moved every day – that is a huge amount of money. Think about how many millions it does take to bring about a total of a trillion and then consider that this is done on a daily basis – if you want to get involved in where the money is, forex trading is one ‘setting’ where money is exchanging hands daily.
The currencies that are traded on the forex markets are going to be those from every country around the world. Every currency has it own three-letter symbol that will represent that country and the currency that is being traded. For example, the Japanese yen is the JPY and the United Stated dollar is USD. The British pound is the GBP and the Euro is the EUR. You can trade within many currencies in one day, or you can trade to a different currency every day. Most all trades through a broker, or those any company are going to require some type of fee so you want to be sure about the trade you are making before making too many trades which are going to involve many fees.
Trades between markets and countries are going to happen every day. Some of the most heavily trades occur between the Euro and the US dollar, and then the US dollar and the Japanese yen, and then of the other most often seen trades is between the British pound and the US dollar. The trades happen all day, all night, and thought out various markets. As one country opens trading for the day another is closing. The time zones across the world affect how the trading takes place and when the markets are open.
When you are making a transaction from one market to another, involving one currency to another you will notice the symbols are used to explain the transactions. All transactions are going to look something like this EURzzz/USDzzz the zzz is to represent the percentages of trading for the percentage of the transaction. Other instances could look like this AUSzzz/USD and so on. When reading and reviewing your forex statements and online information you will understand it all much better if you are to remember these symbols of the currencies that are involved.
Forex trading, what the hype is all about
Forex trading is all about making big money. Some investors have found it quite easy to make a large amount of money as the forex market changes daily. Forex, is the foreign exchange market. Online and offline you will find references to the forex market as FX as well. Forex trading takes place through a broker or a financial institution often where you are able to purchase other types of stocks, bonds and investments.
When you are thinking about getting involved in the forex markets you should know you are sending money to be invested with other countries. This is done to prop up the investments of people involved in certain types of hedge funds, and in the markets overseas. The forex market could have your money invested in one market one day, and the next day your money is invested in another country. The daily changes are determined by your broker or financial institution. When reading your statements and learning more about your account, you will find that every type of currency has three letters that will represent that currency.
For example, the United States dollars is USD, the Japanese yen is JPY, and the British pound sterling will read as GBP. You will also find that for every transaction on your account listing you will see information that looks like this: JPYzzz/GBPzzz. This means that you took your Japanese yen money and invested it into something in the British pound market. You will find many transactions from one currency to another if you have money that is scattered through out the forex markets.
Forex markets trading by investment management firms are the companies you can trust with your money. You want to find a company that has been dealing with forex trading since the early seventies, and not someone just new on the block so you get the most for your hard earned money. It is important that you beware of companies that are popping up online, and often times from foreign countries that are stating they can get you involved in the forex markets and trading. Read the fine print, and know whom you are dealing with for the best possible protection.
If you are interested in trading on the forex market, you will find limits for investing are different from company to company. Often times you will learn that you need a minimum of $250 or $500 while other companies will need $1000 or $10,000. The company you are dealing with will set limits in how much you need to open an account with their company. The scams that are online will tell you, that you only need a $1 or $5 to open an account, but you need to learn more about that company and where they are doing business before investing any money, this is for your own protection while dealing in forex trading and markets online.
Forex trading, where do customers go?
Forex trading uses currency and stock markets from a variety of countries to create a trading market where millions and millions are traded and exchanged daily. This market is similar to the stock market, as people buy and sell, but the market and the over all results are much much larger. Those involved in the forex trading markets include the Deutsche bank, UBS, Citigroup, and others such as HSBC, Braclays, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan Chase, and still others such as Goldman Sachs, ABN Amro, Morgan Stanley, and so on.
To get involved in the forex trading markets, contacting any of these large broker assistance firms is going to be in your best interest. Sure, anyone can get involved in the forex market, but it does take time to learn about what is hot, what is not, and just where you should place your money at this time.
International banks are the markets biggest users on the forex markets, as they have millions of dollars to invest daily, to earn interest and this is just one method of how banks make money on the money you save in their bank. Think about the bank that you deal with all the time. Do you know if you can go there, and obtain money from ‘another’ country if you are heading out on vacation? If not, that bank is most likely not involved in forex trading. If you have to know if your bank is involved in forex trading, you can ask any manager or you can look at the financial information sheets that banks are to report to the public on a quarterly baiss.
If you are new to the forex market, it is important to realize there is no one person or one bank that controls all the trades that occur in the forex markets. Various currencies are traded, and will originate from anywhere in the world. The currencies that are most often traded in the forex markets include those of the US dollar, the Eurozone euro, the Japanese yen, the British pound sterling and the Swiss franc as well as the Australian dollar. These are just a few of the currencies that are traded on the forex markets, with many other counties currencies to be included as well. The main trading centers for the forex trading markets are located in Tokyo, New York and in London but with other smaller trading centers located thought out the world as well.
Who is participating in forex market trades?
The forex market is all about trading between countries, the currencies of those countries and the timing of investing in certain currencies. The FX market is trading between counties, usually completed with a broker or a financial company. Many people are involved in forex trading, which is similar to stock market trading, but FX trading is completed on a much larger overall scale. Much of the trading does take place between banks, governments, brokers and a small amount of trades will take place in retail settings where the average person involved in trading is known as a spectator. Financial market and financial conditions are making the forex market trading go up and down daily. Millions are traded on a daily basis between many of the largest countries and this is going to include some amount of trading in smaller countries as well.
From the studies over the years, most trades in the forex market are done between banks and this is called interbank. Banks make up about 50 percent of the trading in the forex market. So, if banks are widely using this method to make money for stockholders and for their own bettering of business, you know the money must be there for the smaller investor, the fund mangers to use to increase the amount of interest paid to accounts. Banks trade money daily to increase the amount of money they hold. Overnight a bank will invest millions in forex markets, and then the next day make that money available to the public in their savings, checking accounts and etc.
Commercial companies are also trading more often in the forex markets. The commercial companies such as Deutsche bank, UBS, Citigroup, and others such as HSBC, Braclays, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan Chase, and still others such as Goldman Sachs, ABN Amro, Morgan Stanley, and so on are actively trading in the forex markets to increase wealth of stock holders. Many smaller companies may not be involved in the forex markets as extensively as some large companies are but the options are stil there.
Central banks are the banks that hold international roles in the foreign markets. The supply of money, the availability of money, and the interest rates are controlled by central banks. Central banks play a large role in the forex trading, and are located in Tokyo, New York and in London. These are not the only central locations for forex trading but these are among the very largest involved in this market strategy. Sometimes banks, commercial investors and the central banks will have large losses, and this in turn is passed on to investors. Other times, the investors and banks will have huge gains.
Scams to be wary of A FOREX scam is one that involves trading but will turn out to be a fraud; you have no chance of getting your money back once you have invested it. If you were to invest money with a company stating they are involved in FOREX trading you want read closely to learn if they are permitted to do business in your country. Many companies are not permitted in the FOREX market, as they have defrauded investors before. In the last five years, with the help of the Internet, FOREX trading and the awareness of FOREX trading has become all the rage. Banks are the number one source for FOREX trading to take place, where a trained and licensed broker is going to complete transactions and requirements you set forth. Commissions are paid on the transaction and this is the usual. Another type of scam that is prevalent in the FOREX markets is software that will aid you in making trades, in learning about the foreign markets and in practicing so you can prepare yourself for following and making trades. You want to be able to rely on a program or software that is really going to make a difference. Consult with your financial broker or your bank to learn more about FOREX trading, the FX markets and how you can avoid being the victim while investing in these markets. CAREER BUILDING,
Wild Locations for Locksmiths
Teaching the locksmith craft can begin at a very young age. When a child has an interest in the mechanics of things, in how things fit together and how they come apart, it can lead to a future with locks and other interesting mechanisms associated with locks.
The locksmith trade can be learned by experimenting, self-taught courses, apprenticeships, from a family member in the business, from videos, or through distance courses. It takes a combination of these things to advance to the professional status.
If you choose to learn by experimenting, you could be setting yourself up for suspicion if anyone knows of your skills and something is stolen from an area you visited. A lawsuit or jail time could ensue if the wrong person with a vendetta against you were to incriminate you falsely. Becoming certified may be a step towards a legitimate and positive image of your craft and your character.
Should you desire to become an apprentice from an established locksmith, it is best to determine that this person is certified. Know also that there are many aspects of the business to learn and you may need more training than an apprenticeship from one person. If that person specializes in automotive locksmithing and you desire to learn military locksmithing, you'll have a start in the right direction but will need more information and experience.
If you've considered becoming certified through a school or distance course, make sure that the school is certified and that the place where you purchase your distance course is legitimate and accredited. If the school is a sham, even though you may learn everything you need to know, it may make your certificate a sham as well. Your investment should be placed in respectable establishments.
Learning which area of locksmithing you'd be happiest choosing may require some research and/or experimentation. Even if you choose an area and later decide to change your focus, the knowledge you've acquired could still come in handy in your career path.
Courses in becoming a locksmith can take nine months to two years to complete. There is much to be learned through additional experience besides the courses. You'll need to update your knowledge and skills as time goes on.
The beginning of your career will usually involve books, hardware, and a key making machine. There are many helpful forums on the internet to point you in the right direction and provide helpful hints as well. Knowing which equipment to start with is a must. If you have a limited budget to begin with, you'll want to get the most from your money. You can't put all your money into the books and skip the key blanks. You'll need both.
Locksmiths service many types of businesses. Unlocking cars is not the only way to make money in the business. Many small towns don't even have locksmith services. If you can afford to run the business out of your home, you could be extremely helpful to people in rural communities. Building a name for yourself through word-of-mouth in small areas can lead to loyal customers who are happy to spread the word and advertise for you. This in turn leads to contracts with bigger businesses. Learning the locksmith craft involves people skills as well as book work.
When Do Prisons Need Locksmiths?
Some prisons have been known to teach locksmith skills to inmates. There has been some controversy over this for obvious reasons. Why would prison officials give someone the tools to become an even better criminal? To learn the craft, the group has access to tools that can be made into weapons. Prisoners are quite creative in learning how to make and hide weapons. They're also creative in the weapons they do make with what few tools they are provided. So, allowing the prisoners to become locksmiths not only teaches them a skill to enhance criminal behavior, it also provides access to something that could later harm another inmate, guard, or nurse. But there has been much information and attention on reforming criminals as opposed to merely housing them during their time of incarceration.
It is true that people who go to prisons can become reformed individuals who decide to turn their lives around for the good of the public. There are people who are falsely accused and incarcerated who deserve a chance to improve their skills. But people who are put in the position of changing locks and maintaining security systems are supposed to be free of criminal backgrounds.
Much criticism occurred over the television series that provided information on improving security in homes. Professional criminals would be called to stage a break in to show the homeowners how vulnerable their security systems actually are. The homeowners would watch the whole ordeal on camera; then a professional locksmith would go in to change the locks and enhance the security system for the home. Some said this only set the stage for amateur criminals to learn more tricks. However, just as much damage is done by well-meaning individuals who keep valuable information from the public. How do our security measures improve? They improve by exposing the weaknesses. So, someone who has actually been in prison or jail for breaking and entering would be the best person from whom to acquire information.
Locksmiths have been called to several prisons across the globe because of staff carelessness. Keys are placed in the hands of what is supposed to be competent, trustworthy individuals. Allowing anyone to take these keys home after work only sets up the temptation for misuse and the chance to misplace a highly valuable set of items. Even long-term employees can become tempted by wrong-doing. High priority is supposed to be placed on keeping the criminals in their jails and prisons, which should mean high priority to protect the very keys that are necessary to keep them there.
When keys are lost to a prison, thousands of dollars must be spent to re-key and/or replace locks for the facility. Prisoners must be kept on lockdown while the locks are being replaced or re-keyed. This is an example of a simple mistake that cost the institution a large sum and also provided job security for the locksmith.
Not only does the locksmith have to keep the prisons safe, they also have to keep the employees safe in their own homes for the times a prisoner could be released who has a grudge.
What Are Some of the Dangers a Locksmith Faces?
Being a locksmith in today's world contains dangers as much for the locksmith as it does for the person who needs the locksmith services. People should be more suspicious of who they allow to work on locks for their businesses and homes because of the courage of today's criminals, the technology, and the availability of supplies that fall into the wrong hands. The locksmith has to be protected from false accusations, from being blamed for damage he or she did not do, and from being sued.
Being in the locksmith field of work is a career choice to take seriously and with pride for those who want to excel and be respected and recognized. As with any other career, there will be locksmiths who are trustworthy and reliable and those who are less worthy of the public's business.
For people who are forced to call a locksmith with no time for preparation to check into the different backgrounds of the locksmiths in an area, it can be a danger for their future sense of security. Anyone who has phobias or who is unnaturally suspicious could suffer severe health problems simply because they don't know how much they could trust the locksmith. A locksmith who is running the business as a sham can put the public in danger of theft, rapes, beatings, or even murder. The unknown can create problems mentally and emotionally for the person who is unstable.
Locksmith education is offered to anyone who is willing to pay for the course. This puts the public in danger because the student does not have to prove a criminal background before he or she is approved for the course.
There is also the danger the locksmith is put in because they have no assurances of the intent of the person for whom they are about to do business. The locksmith's safety is just as important as the safety of the customer. The locksmith must know their own rights and must be in charge of their own self-protection. Their reputation comes second to their own safety.
Locksmiths who are unfairly accused of wrong-doing are in danger of losing much-needed business. They must fight for their reputation and to be able to acquire new customers and keep them. The locksmith must also take precautions to arm themselves with the proper licenses, insurance, and certification as well as take steps to protect themselves physically.
There are dangers in having access knowledge to people's homes and businesses because of the potential for wrong-doing by trespassers, disgruntled family members or friends, divorcees in battle, unhappy business partners, and in being in any remote areas. Another danger lies in the locksmith hiring employees who may have questionable backgrounds. Besides the locksmith having to worry about protecting himself from his customers or other dangerous people or situations, he also has to protect himself from hiring the wrong employees.
Being a locksmith can be a profitable, enjoyable business with many rewards as long as the proper precautions are taken. Hiring a locksmith can safe and secure as long as the proper precautions are taken. Awareness pays off from both perspectives!
Tools and Equipment for Locksmiths
Locksmiths have to put several thousands of dollars into their tools and equipment investment. They may start out in the hundreds, but the cost will grow as the business grows. If a locksmith is interested in specializing in several areas, there are different tools for each area.
Aside from the normal tools of the trade, such as key blanks and a key making machine, a locksmith must break down the types of key blanks into different categories and buy other items to go along with these. Key blanks come as at least six different types of residential blanks (from $5 to over $50), ten brands of commercial key blanks, and automotive key blanks for domestic and foreign vehicles.
How is the locksmith to keep up with all the different keys? He/she must buy key tags, drawers, and key towers (tower only with no blanks, $500). These keys require key cutters. There are at least six different kinds of cutters. A manual duplicator costs $400-$600. A semi-automatic duplicator costs $655-$1600. An automatic duplicator costs $800-$1300. A tubular key duplicator costs $400-$1200. Code cutters cost $1900-$3100. Then there are your cutter wheels which cost in the range of $33-$340.
A locksmith must buy pins, pinning kits, picks, pick sets, tension wrenches, and many different locks. There are hospital locks, government locks, gate locks, electronic hardware, furniture locks, biometric fingerprint locks, and electromagnetic locks ($200-$700).
Every locksmith who has trained with a distance school will know about Kwikset locks and IICO key making machines. These are standard equipment for locksmiths-in-training. There are academies that teach courses on a course-by-course basis to further educate the craftsmen.
There are also transponder keys that require a code machine to code the key for the vehicles to work in the ignition. Newer model vehicles with added security methods use electromagnetic fields of energy that are sent to a computer in the car. (This is an example of technology and computers sneaking into yet another area of our lives.) Coding keys in this manner is a way to increase security for the automobile owner as well as reduce costs for the insurance companies.
There are older vehicles still in operation that require the simple use of the Slim Jim tool, so a locksmith must keep older tools around as well. Besides accommodating people who can't afford the newer, more sophisticated vehicles, there are collectors of antiques who won't want their cars damaged. So, the locksmith must know how to open the vehicles in a way that causes the least amount of forced entry. Even people who don't own expensive cars are proud of what they own and won't appreciate damage.
As is evident, there is much for a professional locksmith to learn. Much of it can be retained by repetition. There are many locks that use the same tools and methods to unlock. But for the loads of information that can't be retained, the locksmith must rely on paper tools. These exist in the manuals and written information that must be kept for reference purposes.
Things to Learn as a Locksmith
A locksmith must, of course, learn the basics of being a locksmith. The locksmith must learn the tools necessary, the machines used, the locks and systems on the market, key identification, panic hardware, electronic security, business security, home security, and tax information. The locksmith must also learn advertising, bookkeeping, employee information, hiring techniques, safety measures for him or herself, safety for the employees who will be left at the office, pricing, and customer relations.
Being a locksmith involves much more than a person might realize. This is a craft that is becoming more and more sophisticated as the technology and the laws increasingly become more complicated. The knowledge of the locksmith must change and grow with the business and the modern world.
Customer relations are important for any business. It is important to gain the trust and the respect of the customers to be able to maintain the business. The locksmith must learn how to respect the customers' privacy and private information. The locksmith must learn how to communicate effectively with the public.
Learning how to locksmith from an accredited institution is important both for the quality of information provided as well as the end results. If you learn locksmithing on your own through books or personal experimenting, you will not gain the necessary credibility to earn your place in the business world. This may gain you a very small following of customers, but it will also carry great risks. Knowing how to gain access into people's homes, businesses, and vehicles must be treated as highly confidential information.
It is possible to operate a small locksmith business. If you want to specialize in only automobiles, you can concentrate on an education and equipment for the locksmith knowledge for that particular field. You may want to expand your knowledge to focus on locksmithing for residences only or businesses only. Locksmiths have a choice of several areas to learn and specialize. You can choose to combine all the areas and learn one area at a time, expanding your knowledge and your business slowly.
One thing to remember when choosing the field of the locksmith is the demand in your area. How many locksmiths are already available? What are their specialties? Are there any public complaints about the local locksmith businesses? Are there any public needs that aren't being met? How can you put your business one level higher than those that are already available? Knowing which questions to ask is also an important learning step for a locksmith.
Being a locksmith can be very rewarding for the right person, but it is important to research the field to learn if this is the right business for you. Two more questions to ask while learning about being a locksmith are: what hours must you keep, and what demands will this field of work place on your family? The public can be unforgiving in times of desperation.
If a storm has damaged a home or a business, if a criminal has broken into a home or business, or if security system has malfunctioned, will you be able to accommodate the needs of your customers? As always, preparation is the key to success!
The Lock Companies Behind Locksmiths
Be it directly or indirectly, locksmiths deal with all sorts of companies in their line of work. Some big names for these companies are: Yale, Master Lock, Kwikset, Medeco, Schlage, Sentry, Olympus, Weiser, and American Lock USA.
Yale created and patented the first compact cylinder pin lock in 1845. They're well-known as lock manufacturers and distributors. But they are only one of many who have made an important name for themselves. All locksmiths are acquainted with the Yale brand as well as the ones that follow.
Weiser Locks offer fashionable doorwear. Their locks have been featured in films and used in the homes of Hollywood stars. They made a touchpad electronic deadbolt which allows temporary access for service personnel and babysitters. Locksmiths buy kits to rekey Weiser Locks when it is necessary.
Locks are used in many areas of our lives. We use them for bicycle locks, gun cabinets, safes, mailboxes, patio doors, furniture, lockers, and tool sheds. There is a high probability that there is something in every area of a home that has a lock of some type on it.
Locksmiths have to learn the different tricks to the many brands as well as some of their background. The Master Lock brand are most likely used in some way in every household in America. Master Locks are known well by locksmiths. They are used in homes, businesses, schools, and many industries.
Kwikset manufactures residential door locks and door hardware. Deadbolts, door knobs, keyless entry locks, door levers, handlesets, and pocket door hardware are their specialties. Any locksmith in America can operate Kwikset brand products because they're popular. Keyless entry presented a learning experience for locksmiths worldwide.
Sentry locks are well known locks, too. Their line of safes is widely used and are great products for protecting valuables. The products are especially valuable in cases where fire, burglary, or natural disaster has caused keys to be lost, forgotten, or damaged.
Because burglars often use forced entry to steal from residences, a locksmith must know how to repair the damage done. This can include replacing the hardware that was damaged. If a locksmith doesn't sell the brand the customer prefers, they must know where to find the right brand and how to install it or at least know of a reliable or more improved substitute.
Besides working with the brand names in their businesses, locksmiths can also find employment with lock manufacturing companies. Companies such as Sentry offer excellent benefits and perks to their employees. Some of these include dry cleaning services, on-site fitness centers, pre-paid legal services, and discounted insurance rates.
American Lock manufactures locks for outdoor security and industrial security as well as many different types of padlocks. There are important items that must remain outdoors that often need to be locked for security purposes. Industrial security requires industrial locks.
Besides the regular types of locks that are attached to outdoor equipment, there is also the equipment that has built-in locks. Lawnmowers, power boats, four wheelers, and other items that people invest in and need keys to use. Locksmiths can be called for these items as well, to keep from damaging the ignitions when a key is lost. So, the locksmiths must also be acquainted with the brands of locks used in outdoor equipment.
The Cost of Being a Locksmith
A good, trustworthy locksmith must invest in more than just an education. But the bare minimum of education would cost close to $1000 for a home-study course, so the business does require an investment. The person must invest in themselves, their education, their equipment, their business location, advertising, insurance, and more.
Any business worth having is worth a quality investment. One might have to start out small with just the basics of everything and the cheapest of everything. As the business grows, the cost of running the business should also grow to improve the customer base and the modern technology as well as any refresher courses that may be necessary. An important point to consider is the quality of your equipment. If you can afford to invest in better equipment, it could save you money in the long run. Sometimes cheap supplies don't last long enough to make their purchase worthwhile.
Locksmith supplies are sold in many places, and it may pay to shop around. But the costs of being a locksmith will also be determined by what type of locksmith you would want to become. If you are only going to specialize in automotive work, you would not need to spend as much as you would if you were to invest in equipment for government security purposes.
Other costs of being a locksmith would include the sacrifices you would have to make to achieve the success you desire in the business. Being dedicated to learning the craft so that you can advance to the point where you can own a big business will leave less attention for other areas in your life. You must pay for your education, your tools, and your transportation. This may mean less money for family extras. Are you prepared to make sacrifices for the benefit of your future as a successful locksmith?
On the other hand, if it is only a small business you desire and the results don't need to come about soon, you may be able to learn slowly and still have plenty of time for your family life. If being a locksmith is only to be a hobby for you, there are even less sacrifices you would have to make.
There's also the issue of your business location. If your family would have to move for your business to flourish, other sacrifices could be at stake. If you live in an area where you wouldn't be able to work out of your home or where you wouldn't earn enough money to pay your work expenses, you face the choice of either putting your ideas of locksmithing aside or of uprooting your family. This means educational changes for children, possible career changes for the spouse, moving expenses, and so on.
Another cost of being a locksmith involves hiring employees. That leads to issues of worker's compensation, employee insurance, more paperwork, and time devoted to the hiring process. If you are determined and dedicated to the craft, you will be making an investment towards the future that could carry on for years to come. Weigh your options well. The cost may be overrun by the benefits!
The Art of Locksmiths
Locks have been created in boring, plain, mechanical fashion, solely for the purpose of security with no thought or care to the art world. Locks are, after all, a means of privacy and protection, which doesn't usually bring art to mind. However, there have been many designs of the lock that would make a locksmith proud to say he's a part of the lock world. Decorative locks can create quite a stir in displays for businesses and homes alike. Part of the allure of certain pieces of furniture is the design of the lock.
Art and creativity have improved the looks of the functional lock as well as the decorative lock. Improving the looks also boosted popularity and sales. There are combination locks now that make school children quite happy. Locks that light up, bright colors and interesting shapes have enhanced school supply shopping for both mothers and children.
The craft of the locksmith is an art in itself. But the artistic improvements in the locks elevated the recognition of the makers of those locks and also of the locksmiths who must know how to work them. Making the locks look better didn't improve memory. People still forget where they put keys, lose their keys, and forget their combinations.
There is also art in the photographs, clip art, stationery, and historical documents related to locksmithing. Paintings, posters, and ancient memorabilia all make the locksmith and his equipment an interesting part of art. Locks are found in pictures that don't even focus on locksmiths or locks. Locks contribute to history and genealogy. You'll see locks in historical references to churches, old general stores, and banks.
There's art in the business cards and advertisements the locksmiths use. There's also art in the key blanks, which have become quite decorative. There's art in the colors and designs and even in the bright key tags you can place on your keys.
Keys are now manufactured with themes such as Disney characters, cartoon characters, football team logos, American flags, and animals. Locksmiths must stay in tune with what sells in today's society to enhance their businesses and draw the attention of the youth.
Chinese locks are art pieces because of their unusual opening procedures. Their shapes make them interesting, but they're functional as well. The craftsmanship is outstandingly artistic. The French have some creative designs in their locks as well. Sometimes the artwork is not necessarily in the lock itself but in the framework around the lock.
There is also artwork in the locks of old as well as the locksmith tools of old. Ancient tools add to the quality of museums, giving credit due to the craftsmen who created the tools. Sometimes art is not recognized as such until it becomes a part of what is considered ancient. There is artistic quality in the locksmiths of old as well. Houdini was a famous locksmith who awed the public with his antics and magical quality to picking locks in his escape routines. He brought a flair to the art world as well as the locksmith world. Art is like beauty; it is in the eye of the beholder.
Terms of the Locksmith Profession
Have you ever heard of a slim jim? No, it is not a piece of beef jerky or a skinny rock star. It is a slender metal tool created for sliding between the door frame and the window on a automobile door to gain entry when a set of keys has been locked inside said automobile. It has been possible to buy a slim jim through perfectly legal means over the years, causing the automotive industry to fight back with tougher entry methods.
Were you aware of a tool called an electric lock pick gun? These are used to open pin tumbler locks, which make up a huge majority of locks sold in America. These guns contain metal needles that vibrate the pins upward and are valuable to the security profession.
A clutch-headed screw is not a silly pet name for a friend. It's a threaded screw that allows fixed clockwise action for wood or metal. Although other screws are used in locksmithing, this one is not your average screw.
If you would like to sound sophisticated, you could practice using the term escutcheon. It might win points with someone you are trying to impress with your new knowledge of the locksmith trade. It describes the cover for the key hole of a lock similar to a mortice (also spelled mortise). A mortise is not a yoga position. It is a method that allows a face plate and trim to be exposed, placing the lock case within a hole in the door or drawer.
Locksmiths must be literate and familiar with the terms of their trade. It helps if their customers have an idea of the terms as well. These terms are necessary when ordering parts for the replacement or installment of locks. If the customer has a problem with the lock after installation, it is helpful if he or she can describe the parts.
Being a locksmith involves a decent grasp of the English language. Spelling is important as well. Advancement may depend on recognizing the spelling of the terms for a test or to be able to communicate effectively on paperwork. It is a positive step to become acquainted with the books and publications of the locksmith trade, even before becoming certified. Technology demands attention on a regular basis because it changes and evolves so quickly. An ongoing education is part of the job for a dedicated locksmith.
If you are really good at the mechanics of the locksmith trade but have trouble with spelling, keep a dictionary or thesaurus handy for the paperwork aspect of the job. Conveying the proper image on paper is important for high-profile business. If it is necessary to send a letter to a business, your grammar, spelling, and punctuation will put a negative image on your business if it is incorrect and sloppy.
Other interesting terms in locksmithing include sash, rose, and spoon. Some of the terms can be very fun to play with and add an area of interest to the lingo. But more importantly, they add an air of sophistication to the locksmith who uses them wisely.
Stories Related to Locksmiths
Locksmiths encounter some interesting situations in their line of work. In one instance, a locksmith received a lock cylinder from a car door that had been taken off the car because the owner lost the keys.
In another instance, a locksmith had to open a mausoleum niche so that a potato chip can could be removed. Someone had taken the body's remains out of the hallowed space and left the can in place.
Locksmiths get frantic calls in the hot summer to unlock car doors when preoccupied mothers or fathers accidentally lock their keys in the car with their infants or toddlers. They get calls in the winter when parents lock their keys in the cold cars or the cars that are left running. Unfortunately, these stories don't always end on a positive note.
A locksmith of the year 1977 had to remove a wad of mud left by a colony of wasps in a lock on the door of a University mausoleum. The mausoleum is a historical monument of artistic beauty. The tomb was built in 1888 and is the home of Egyptian sphinxes of granite, bronze outer gate, polished granite doors, Italian marble walls, ceilings and floor, and three sarcophagi of marble cut. A sarcophagus is a coffin of sorts, like the mummies of Egypt were placed in before being taken to their tombs.
Some locksmiths who unlock car doors or the doors to homes require the person they are assisting to provide proof of legal entry to show that this person has a legal right to enter. The professional must protect himself/herself from being prosecuted for aiding entry to the wrong person.
Locksmiths have had to come to the rescue of people recovering from a night of too much alcohol consumption. The people get drunk and lose their keys or lock the keys in the vehicle.
Locksmiths also have had to rescue the elderly whose caretakers would lock themselves out of the house. They have been counselors to customers who would be in the mood to confide their troubles as the locksmith is working. Locksmiths have saved people from going to jail when they lock themselves out of their cars at busy intersections.
The profession exposes the locksmith to people who are many times in a frantic mood because of a missed appointment, who may be late for work, who have an emergency to get to, who must catch a plane or a bus, and people who have locked their keys inside the car while it's still running.
There are most likely plenty of stories that someone in this profession would be embarrassed to tell. Many stories have been forgotten over the years. Many stories would be too sad to tell. But the gratification the locksmith gets from the customers who truly appreciate the help and show it is sure to be worth the effort. No job is perfect, and there are probably as many drawbacks as there are happy memories. But as with any other job, there will be good days and bad days and plenty to relate to the children and grandchildren.
Overseas Locksmiths
Training for a locksmith to work overseas can be intense. Some of the levels include: Certificate II in Engineering, Certificate III in Locksmithing, Diploma of Engineering Technology. These are primary courses that provide training throughout Australia and overseas.
The course duration for security technology is two years at two nights a week. The student must already have an existing trade qualification or be a minimum of 25 years of age.
London has an impressive locksmith company that has been established since 1784. Bramah manufactures locks for domestic and commercial use. The company is an affiliate member of the Master Locksmiths Association, which you will find is a well-known association for the trade. The Bramah locksmith services go so far as to include a free security survey. The company employs five locksmiths.
Some overseas employers require a locksmith to have experience as an apprentice and a National Certificate in Locksmithing. You're also required to be clear of any dishonest criminal convictions involving prison time! A locksmith must have a clear record for the employers or businesses to be willing to put their trust in the locksmith and the company with which they are associated.
Having a background of security is helpful when obtaining a locksmith job overseas. Mechanical engineering, technology knowledge, woodworking skills, basic welding skills, and conference attendance are all helpful to secure an overseas locksmith position. Health and safety training may also be necessary for any locksmiths who work on construction sites.
Ideas for places to work as a locksmith abroad include New Zealand, Canterbury, Australia, Wellington, and Auckland. The pay for an overseas locksmith can be as high as $50,000 a year depending on experience, qualifications, and age. Businesses overseas that employ locksmiths are much like those in the United States. Some of these include banks, motels, hospitals, and the auto industry.
If you've considered an overseas job as a locksmith, research the challenges to make preparation easier. Shot records, visas, transportation, foreign languages, health care, living arrangements, and time away from family are all things that need to be determined and considered. What will you do for money until the first paycheck? Where will you stay? It could be the adventure of a lifetime as long as you go into it with an understanding of the situation and decisions you'll need to make.
If you've never worked overseas, it may be helpful to become somewhat acquainted with the area you've chosen (or that has been chosen for you). Take a trip to the local library or check into any information you can acquire online. Going into a new place blindly can be too much of a culture shock and may only result in stress that could be avoided. Preparation is the key to success!
A locksmith must travel to some degree even in the United States, but the roads and streets in a foreign country may be more difficult to navigate. Overseas driving is said to be more of a challenge than what Americans face on their own soil, especially if you aren't familiar with the habits of the locals. Addresses, phone numbers, and maps will become as important to you as the equipment used in your trade. If the employment will eventually lead you back to the United States, there are sure to be plenty of stories to share with friends and family!
Museums for Locksmiths
One of the biggest museums in America that a locksmith would enjoy that is related to their craft is the Lock Museum of America. It's located in Terryville, Connecticut. With eight display rooms and plenty of advertisement, it is sure to draw people from all over the country. You don't have to be a locksmith to be interested in antique locks and the hardware connected to them. Antique doorknob collectors enjoy visiting museums for locksmiths. People who have an interest in old doors or in the artwork of the old locks and related items would enjoy this museum.
Another museum for locksmiths and lock enthusiasts is the Lock Museum that is located in Willowhall, Staffordshire. This museum has been taken over by the Black Country Living Museum in an effort to secure its future. In an effort to preserve the contents and the relevance to history in general, the Black Country Living Museum took an interest in the Lock Museum.
Blake's Lock Museum can be seen in the United Kingdom. California offers the Jehning Family Lock Museum, located in Mountain View. Paris, France is home to the Hotel Liberal Bruand. The Hanns Schell Collection is the world's largest museum of locks and keys. It's located in Austria. Locksmiths should also enjoy the metal locks and keys at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum Shop in Key West, Florida. There's a Powerhouse Museum located in Sydney, Australia.
Doorknobs are collector's items and are a part of a locksmith's work. There's a club called the Antique Doorknob Collectors of America. The interesting items in this club also include antique door hardware and extend to plates, doorbells, coat hooks, and window latches. There are beautiful doorknobs on display in the club's collection.
The Antique Doorknob Collectors of America holds yearly conventions all over the country to learn and share their information. The club has a wonderful collection of Bennington knobs, mineral knobs, real estate hardware, and a group they call Fabulous Doorknobs-this group is made up of Victorian hardware, bronze knobs, and Wheeler knobs.
Donald Jackson offers an impressive Roman gallery of locks, keys, and seal boxes that shows an interesting collection of security hardware. He displays an impressive image from a locksmith's grave stone showing Roman locksmiths at work. Mr. Jackson writes an informative, detailed article on ancient locks, collecting, and fabrication.
West Coast Lock Collectors Association explores the history and ingenuity of locks. They have an annual lock show to thrill collectors and capture the interest of the public. Their table fees are $35 to anyone who is interested in adding their own collection to the event. They send out a quarterly publication to association members. This association is a hobby club that puts any income back into the company for operating expenses.
Antique Padlocks offer internet viewing to provide a look into padlocks of eight different varieties as well as helpful links, patent information, and hardware companies who have marketed padlocks. As thieves became more determined, padlocks did lose some value because they could be cut with bolt cutters. There are still many around today, and there are still requests for locksmiths to remove them. They are sure to remain a part of museums as the years move forward.
Locksmiths in Texas
Texas Locksmiths Association provides education with training classes, scholarship funds for the children of members, continuing education, annual conferences, and trade shows. It's one of the prestigious associations for locksmiths and can be very beneficial to personal and professional growth.
Board members for the TLA do not get paid for their services. Their dedication speaks volumes. They can provide a speaker to talk with groups, use personal expense money, and put a lot of time and effort into member growth and interests of locksmiths and public awareness.
A woman locksmith in Texas can be hard to find. Even though women can earn more by being in a job that is in a male dominated field, not many women seem to be interested in this type of career choice. A woman could also earn more by going into the locksmith business for herself. The field is open to women and it could prove to be a good choice for a second income.
The Department of Public Safety in Texas sets high standards for their locksmiths. They will only hire locksmiths who have been licensed by the DPS. As part of the Private Security Act, locksmith services performed in Texas require a locksmith to have a criminal history fingerprint check. The DPS offers a list of licensed locksmiths for people to verify their legitimacy. A locksmith operating in the state of Texas without a license is committing a misdemeanor. This carries a jail term of one year and/or a fine up to $4000.
A locksmith company is considered a Class B fee on the DPS price list. The registration costs $412. A sole proprietor must submit an assumed name certificate along with an owner registration fee of $55. Other items that must be submitted are the application form, two fingerprint cards, a $25 FBI fingerprint fee, verification of experience, proof of liability insurance, a copy of Level One Certificate for the manager, and completion of a manager qualification exam administered by the Private Security Board.
A Texas locksmith can join any one of several different associations to add to their credibility and increase public trust in their skills. There is the Associated Locksmiths of North Texas, the Greater Houston Locksmiths Association, the Locksmith Association of San Antonio, the Metroplex Locksmith Association, and the Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas Locksmiths Association.
Locksmiths in Texas do have the red tape to go through to become legitimate, but this process helps discourage those who aren't truly dedicated and truly dependable and trustworthy. Besides what has already been mentioned, the locksmith must also be licensed, bonded, and insured. Loyal customers and those who are willing to spread the good word about your business are worth the investment. Every little thing you do to enhance your business and your image will add up to a long-term of success, especially if it is the big accounts you are working towards securing. Image on paperwork as well as your office image and the personal image you present are important to your success.
Learning customer relations is an important step towards your success as well. Knowing how to manage unruly personalities, someone in a panic who has locked a child in a car, or even how to perform CPR are also essential choices. These things help whether you are a locksmith in Texas or in another part of the world!
Learning the Locksmith Craft
How Illegal Locksmiths Hurt the Public
Illegal locksmiths caused annoyances in New York and several other states by placing hard-to-remove stickers on private property. They further insulted residents and business owners by using fake addresses and phone number to avoid getting caught. This is a popular scam tactic for locksmiths who are in the business for the wrong reasons.
There are an unbelievable number of illegal locksmiths across the United States who operated many different businesses under many different names while being licensed under only one name. Many illegal locksmiths place ads in yellow pages with phone numbers that connect to national call centers. The addresses they use in their ads either don't exist or belong to abandoned buildings. Operating under a business name other than the one under which the locksmith is licensed makes it impossible to verify their license for any state level recourse of action for recovery when there has been a scam.
It is recommended that any locksmith's state license be verified before you hire him/her. Taking the locksmith's word for verification only makes your family security vulnerable. The scam artists have access to your home, your personal belongings, private information, keys, codes, and safe combinations. If your instinct tells you there is something vague about their answers to your questions, it may be best to follow your instincts. The locksmiths who are doing business legally and who are trustworthy should not mind satisfying your curiosity about their legitimacy.
Fake locksmiths get away with their illegal scams because they catch people in a jam, in a hurry, too upset to take the proper precautions, and either too lazy to take the time to check credentials or too naïve. They also get past the legal system because of the cracks in the system. Sometimes the very laws we make to protect us are the laws that can also harm us when misused.
One way to tell if a locksmith is honest is to check the advertising for their locksmith license number. It should be posted on all ads, invoices, and business cards. The locksmith should also carry an embossed pocket version of the locksmith license. He/she should be willing to give you the license number when you contact him/her.
There are some other problems with illegal lock pickers. Code grabbers are illegal in the United States, so an individual who refuses to show proper credentials and possesses one is obviously not a certified, registered locksmith. Although there are tools that a burglar uses that are legal for a person to have in possession, such as lock picks, these are not legal in all states. In New York, Illinois, and the District of Columbia lock picks are illegal. In some places, potential burglar tools are only incriminating if you've been suspected of committing a crime or are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
How could it be feasible to carry lock picks and other locksmith tools and be at the wrong place at the wrong time? There are lock picking games and events that allow for a lock picker to have possession of these items. There are people who are interested in such a past time solely for the entertainment value. So, not everyone who might carry the tools is an illegal locksmith or a criminal.
High Priority for Locksmiths
Shunted locks are just one of the items an emergency locksmith must know well. A shunt is the process of turning aside or moving to an alternate course, a bypass. Shunted locks come in different brands. One of those brands is that of a British company named Bramah. The prices for a Bramah shunted lock can go up to $193. These locks are made for wooden doors, metal doors, sliding doors, and cabinets.
A shunt switch is used in a vandal-resistant mortise lock. These locks are used in places such as emergency exits. The complexity of these alarm locks requires educated intelligence on the part of the locksmith who may be required to repair or replace such a lock.
Locksmiths may also be called in a situation where an exit or emergency door has been locked or jammed. There are doors that must legally remain unlocked. Any time they have become illegally obstructed, the locksmith may be called to undo the damage. Sometimes these doors are obstructed because of poor management or because of disgruntled employees.
Locksmiths can be especially important to hospitals, convalescent homes, ambulance services, and police stations. Emergency and health care facilities are of high priority in a locksmith business.
Although some people would categorize simply being locked out of their vehicle as an emergency, there are situations that are of a higher priority. If someone's health or life is at stake or if a criminal situation occurs that requires immediate response, the priority must be put on these situations.
Some emergency locksmith businesses that advertise fast service operate from Atlanta, Georgia to San Francisco, California. There are several businesses that operate out of many offices across the United States.
One has to be especially careful about hiring an emergency locksmith. There have been instances where locksmiths who have operated for years have been found to incorrectly bill the customers out of greed. One locksmith was fired from a hospital after eighteen years of service because he became greedy. He had an elaborate scheme which involved two other employees as well as him. This is an exception to the norm, though.
We have to place our trust in someone, and there are many locksmiths who work hard to earn the trust and deserve it. Just as there are people in other professions who turn bad, there are also bad locksmiths. It doesn't make the profession bad, just that person. In general it is an honorable and respected position and the men and women who enter it must go through a lot to become professionals, including becoming registered in a way that allows the police department and the Better Business Bureau to investigate their background. The majority are proud of their upstanding public image and work hard to maintain control of it.
Locksmiths working with emergency personnel and police are another way they keep us safe. They repair damage done by criminals, install systems that make it harder for criminals to gain illegal entry, and provide us with a sense of inner peace.
Government Locksmiths
Government locksmiths become licensed under the Security Industry Protection Act. Three important institutions associated with government locksmiths are Master Locksmiths of America, Associated Locksmiths of America, and British Locksmiths Institute.
One of the important aspects of the government locksmith's job is discretion. With a country's security at risk, any government office must be serviced only by the most trustworthy of locksmiths. The locksmith must know more than just their doors and windows; they must also know security systems, safe locks, telephone keys, drawer locks, and vehicle locks.
High priority is important for the items the government locks protect as well as for the people the locks protect and the paperwork. Any business must protect its important paperwork and investments, but government business takes on an upper level of importance.
A government locksmith is not just needed to pick locks and provide extra keys. Government locksmiths must be top experts in their field in both customer privacy and the actual work provided. The safety of these high profile clients and what they stand for, weapons, money, records, and personal items is high priority.
It is not only the government of a country that is important; it is also the government of local and state that is a concern to a government locksmith. Any level of government must be treated with special care. If the wrong things happen with local government it can have a domino effect upon other government bodies. Anytime someone can wreak havoc with documents, forms, equipment, public safety, and privileged information, the locksmith is called to upgrade security.
A locksmith for a security service provider can earn as much as $66,000 per year in California. They must have knowledge of the latest and best quality equipment and techniques to service their clients and build the best reputation for themselves.
A government locksmith must have electronic and computer skills that are updated. Their knowledge of lock and keys are not all they have to practice. They must also understand thumb print and retinal scanners, pin pads, and electronic swipe cards among other things.
Because passwords are considered a security hole, retinal scanners have taken on more importance. Retinal scanners are a form of biometric identification. They bypass passwords to move into a more complicated means of identity and security. For a retinal scanner, there is an enrollment process that captures the sample. The sample is stored in a template to be used for future authentication comparison. The template is matched against data, such as a user name or PIN.
Retinal scanning provides high accuracy, but it still meets some user resistance because of the misconception that a laser is shot into the eye. Focus on a given point is significant for accuracy, which can cause a small problem for someone with eyesight handicaps.
Other high technology advances for locksmiths to learn in a high profile field like government work are: voice recognition, iris scanning, signature verification, and facial recognition. So, as you can see, a locksmith who specializes in government work can be much more than just a lock picker and key maker.
Games for Locksmiths
Being a locksmith is not necessarily a boring job. There is the limited interaction with the customers to keep a locksmith in touch with the human side of the business. The work gives the locksmith focus. The travel provides stimulation. The technological changes and education to keep up with the times provides mental growth. So, what about the fun? Even these mechanical minded members of our community like to have fun.
The challenge of picking locks is viewed as a game for some locksmiths. As they grow in their experience, they are able to take on more complicated tasks. It is said that a locksmith sees a lock as a puzzle.
A locksmith plays a part in the game called World of War Craft, unlocking boxes in the trade screen. A game called Crack the Code allows the locksmith to click on numbers and enter until the combination is correct. Cleaner Scrape is an online game featuring Bob the Locksmith. There's also a Kensington Lock Picking online free flash game. Gridlock is another fun online game for lock pickers that offers three levels of difficulty to accommodate beginners to the more experienced.
A board game that relates to the locksmith trade is called Break the Safe. It's a fairly new game created by Forrest-Puzan Creative. Players have to work as a team to find the keys, disarm the traps, and evade the guard dogs.
On a bigger scale, locksmiths can join in a Dutch Open lock-picking competition in the Dutch village of Sneek. This offers intellectual stimulation and fun for any locksmith or lock picker lucky enough to participate. Some of the world's most accomplished lock pickers attend this event.
Another large event for lock pickers and locksmiths is held by the Locksport International. DEFCON 14 held workshops, talks, sales of tools, speed competitions, tool making, and demonstrations for the enjoyable event that welcomed amateurs as well as professionals.
A Lock Picking Pogoda will be held in Cleveland, Ohio in April of 2008 for locksmiths and lock picking enthusiasts. Featured will be your regular American locks, Chinese knock-offs, cabinet locks, and high security locks. Safe cracking is also on the agenda to present a challenge for those who are brave enough to give it a shot.
Locksmiths aren't the only ones who enjoy the locksmith events, games, and clubs. There are people who enjoy learning about locks and how they work just for the fun of it. It can be gratifying to bust the secrets of the lock companies and manufacturers. This isn't necessarily a bad idea. It provides a challenge to show these businesses where their vulnerabilities lie so that improvements can be made. People who learn how to pick locks are not just criminally-minded individuals.
Although this possibility does exist, it is only a part of the group of people interested in this trade.
Locksmiths do, of course, enjoy other activities besides lock picking games and events. Just as doctors want more fun than just playing the board game called Operation, the locksmiths are going to be unique individuals who will want more fun than just that which revolves around their craft.
Famous Locksmiths
If you aren't familiar with any famous locksmiths, it's no surprise. Many locksmiths prefer to keep a low profile except to gain a reputable business. There are famous locksmiths within the locksmith community who are well-known for their skills as lock pickers and dominate the hobby. But as for the famous locksmiths who take their profession more seriously, little is put in the public eye.
Schneider Locksmith of New York City is famous in their area of the states. But this is a famous company, not an individual. An individual of olden days who was famous for the locksmith skills was an Englishman named Robert Barron. He improved security of the lock itself with the invention in 1778 of the double tumbler lock. There was no modern day security, no electronic technology to help him. He used the impressive skills of his mind and hands to create his masterpiece of the era.
Another famous locksmith was Jeremiah Chubb. He patented a detector lock back in 1818. This particular lock had six levers and won him a monetary award as well as ongoing fame. Mr. Chubb was located in London.
Locks were made from wood long, long ago. They have amazed, confounded, and frustrated people over the years. They have made some people and companies rich (the inventors and manufacturers) and made others secure. No longer made from metal, these mechanical contraptions have come a long way over the years.
One famous locksmith known for other talents was Houdini. He was a magician who thrived on escape tactics. The escape tactics depend on locks of some form or fashion. Houdini was an expert lockpicker who captivated audiences with his skills.
The King of France, also known as Louis XVI, was a very famous locksmith. He was known for his reign as a bad king, but his passion was with locks. He had unusual and outstanding skills as a locksmith. This may not have won him any medals of love amongst his followers, but it did put him in history as a famous locksmith.
It used to be that one had to be an apprentice to learn to be a locksmith. Being an apprentice has great benefits, one of which is recommendation from the mentor. Passing on the trade can be as rewarding as learning it from a master of the trade.
One famous locksmith was Arthur C. Smith. He specialized in ship locks in the late 1800's. Located in Wolverhampton, which is in the English West Midlands, Mr. Smith put his mark on the world.
French locksmiths were known for their artwork on their locks. Resembling fancy scrollwork, these locks were fashioned in the true French elaborate designs. The French liked beauty in many areas of their lives and their locks were not to be left out.
A famous American locksmith known for his bank locks was Linus Yale, Jr., of New York. James Sargent, also of New York, patented a time lock mechanism, which made him yet another important locksmith.
As you can tell, locksmiths are important all over the world and throughout history. They are an important breed of human in our society, and yet one of the most overlooked. Locksmiths are constantly put to the test and should be famous for their endurance!
Connecting the Virtual World to Locksmiths
Besides being a form of advertisement for locksmiths, the virtual world is also a source of connecting to others in the business. It is a place to connect with customers and a place to shop for ideas. The locksmiths can check on laws, find out about advancements in their field of work, and learn tricks of the trade online.
The virtual world is a great place for the locksmiths to buy supplies without having to travel to stores and shops or order through physical catalogues. This saves them money that can be spent in other ways to enhance the quality of their businesses. They can save time choosing what items to put in their shops to sell, which brands, compare prices, and check feedback on possible brands or equipment.
The locksmiths can also use the virtual world to explore competition in their field. They can learn from other locksmiths, pass on information of their own, and explore other parts of the world for places to do business.
The virtual world also allows the locksmith a way to build a positive image for the profession as well as his/her own business. If they have a comment section, a suggestion section, or games on their own web site, it can help connect them to their customers and potential customers. Building interest in their businesses is one way the locksmiths must practice public relations.
The internet allows the locksmiths to pay their bills for their businesses. It can save them time and effort to set up online

Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the incognito window. Any files you download or bookmarks you create will be preserved, however.
Going incognito doesn't affect the behaviour of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:
- Websites that collect or share information about you
- Internet service providers or employers that track the pages you visit
- Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
- Surveillance by secret agents
- People standing behind you
NOTE: Because Google Chrome does not control how extensions handle your personal data, all extensions have been disabled for incognito windows. You can re-enable them individually in the extensions manager.

Here are answers to some common questions about InPrivate.
What is InPrivate Browsing?
InPrivate Browsing prevents Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. This helps prevent anyone else who might be using your computer from seeing where you visited and what you looked at on the web. When you start InPrivate Browsing, Internet Explorer opens a new window. The protection that InPrivate Browsing provides is only in effect during the time that you use that window. You can open as many tabs as you want in that window, and they will all be protected by InPrivate Browsing. However, if you open another browser window, that window will not be protected by InPrivate Browsing. To end your InPrivate Browsing session, close the browser window

What is InPrivate Filtering?
InPrivate Filtering helps prevent website content providers from collecting information about sites you visit. Here's how it works.
Many webpages use content—such as advertisements, maps, or web analysis tools—from websites other than the one you are visiting. These websites are called content providers or third-party websites. When you visit a website with third-party content, some information about you is sent to the content provider. If a content provider offers content to a large number of the websites you visit, the content provider could develop a profile of your browsing preferences. Profiles of browsing preferences can be used in a variety of ways, including for analysis and serving targeted advertisements.
Usually this third-party content is displayed seamlessly, such as in an embedded video or image. The content appears to originate from the website you originally went to, so you may not know that another website might be able to see where you are surfing. Web analysis or web measurement tools report website visitors' browsing habits, and are not always obvious to you. While these tools can sometimes appear as visible content (such as a visitor counter, for example), they are often not visible to users, as is often the case with web beacons. Web beacons are typically single-pixel transparent images whose sole purpose is to track website usage, and they do not appear as visible content.
InPrivate Filtering works by analyzing web content on the webpages you visit, and if it sees the same content being used on a number of websites, it will give you the option to allow or block that content. You can also choose to have InPrivate Filtering automatically block any content provider or third-party website it detects, or you can choose to turn off InPrivate Filtering.
